PhD Research Fellow in reservoir physics – Centre for Sustainable Subsurface Resources

项目介绍

There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in Reservoir Physics at the Department of Physics and Technology. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year with career-promoting work (e.g. teaching duties at the Department). The position is related to Centre for Sustainable Subsurface Resources (CSSR) and is subject to financing by the University of Bergen.

About the project/work tasks:

CSSR support the Norwegian petroleum industry’s low-carbon transition goal over the next decade by advancing our understanding and modelling of complex subsurface processes. This includes CO2 storage, hydrogen storage and other low-carbon energy carriers, and efficient reservoir drainage.

The PhD Research Fellow will be affiliated with Work Package 2: Short-cycle energy storage efficiency. We will study the impact of subsurface dynamics and bio-geochemical reactions on short-term energy storage. We need new understanding of physical processes during storage and withdrawal cycles to accurately assess the efficiency of short-term energy storage in the subsurface. The PhD Research Fellow will work in an interdisciplinary research team that study hydrogen storage, but with the possibility of extending to other forms of short-cycle energy storage systems. The PhD Research Fellow’s tasks will primarily be experimental, focusing on developing flow tests to quantify storage efficiency and conducting in-situ visualization of flow processes in porous media across scales. The PhD Research Fellow will be active in collaboration between NORCE and the Department of Physics and Technology. We will also collaborate on a regular basis with industry partners in our consortium and take active part in a larger professional environment in applied research.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent education in reservoir physics, geoscience, chemical engineering, applied petroleum technology, or a related field. Master students can apply provided they complete their final master exam within 31.12.2024. It is a requirement for employment that the master’s degree has been awarded.
  • Laboratory experience is a requirement.
  • Laboratory experience from porous media research related to physics and/or chemistry is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of flow and transport processes in porous media is an advantage.
  • Experience from handling gas at elevated pressure conditions is an advantage.
  • Experience from or competence in performing and interpreting microfluidics and/or core floods is an advantage.
  • Experience from flow imaging like MRI and image processing skills using Python, MATLAB or machine learning is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Special requirements for the position
The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.

About the PhD position (applies to university PhD positions):

About the PhD Research Fellow
The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with the possibility for a 4th year, consisting of 25 % career-promoting work (e.g. teaching responsibilities at the department) distributed over the employment period. The 4th year is contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department and will be decided by the head of department upon appointment.

The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a qualifying post (e.g. research fellow, research assistant).

About the research training
As a PhD Research Fellow, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. The deadline for applying for admission to the PhD programme at The Faculty of Sciences and Technology is 2 months after you start your position or after the start of the research project that will lead to the PhD degree. It is a requirement that you satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen.

We can offer:

  • a good and professionally stimulating working environment
  • salary as PhD research fellow (code 1017) is based on the state salary scale. This constitutes a gross annual salary of NOK 540 500 (equivalent to pay grade 55). Further increases in salary are made according to length of service in the position.
  • enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
  • good welfare benefits

Your application must include:

  • a brief account of the applicant’s research interests and motivation for applying for the position
  • the names and contact information for two referees. One of these should be the main advisor for the master’s thesis or equivalent thesis
  • CV
  • Transcripts and diplomas showing completion of the bachelor’s and master’s degrees. If you have not yet completed your master’s degree, please submit a statement from your institution confirming the expected date of award of your master’s degree. Your master’s degree must be documented with transcripts and/or diploma, alternatively a confirmation from your institution on completed degree and your grade, by 31.12.2024.
  • relevant certificates/references
  • approved documentation of proficiency in English (if required, cf. English language requirements for PhD admission)
  • a list of any works of a scientific nature (publication list)
  • your MSc thesis (or a two-page description if it is not yet submitted), and any publications in your name you wish to be considered. If the thesis is not written in a Scandinavian or English language, a 2-page English summary must be provided.

The application and appendices with certified translations into English or a Scandinavian language must be uploaded at Jobbnorge.
