项目介绍
There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in physical oceanography at the Geophysical Institute. The position is affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year with career-promoting work (e.g. teaching at the Department).
We seek a motivated and highly qualified PhD candidate to join our team.
About the project/work tasks
The PhD-project will focus on processes related to shelf break exchanges in the Southern Weddell Sea, Antarctica, with particular focus on the inflow of warmer water masses from the deep ocean onto the continental shelf in the Filchner Trough region.
The PhD candidate will address questions related to the effect of bathymetry, dense water outflow, seasonal and interannual variability in hydrography and atmospheric forcing on the warm inflow. The candidate will process and use altimetry-data from the new Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) in combination with conventional altimetry retrievals and existing in situ observations. The in-situ observations include moored and shipboard measurements of velocity and hydrography.
Supervisors will be Prof. Elin Darelius (UiB) and Antonio Bonaduce (Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center -NERSC). The PhD candidate will be enrolled and employed at the University of Bergen and work closely with scientists from the NERSC, which is located in the same building as the Geophysical Institute. As a PhD-candidate at the Geophysical Institute, you will be affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR). BCCR is the largest climate research centre in the Nordic countries and among the leading centres in Europe. The working environment is highly international with around 200 scientists from 37 countries.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
- Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent education in physical oceanography, meteorology, climate dynamics, physics, applied mathematics, or related and relevant fields. Master students can apply provided they complete their final master exam before 30 June 2025. It is a condition of employment that the master’s degree has been awarded.
- A good understanding of oceanic physical processes and dynamics is required.
- Good skills in mathematics and scientific programming (ideally Matlab or Python) are required.
- Experience in time series analysis is an advantage.
- Experience in satellite altimetry data at the different processing levels is an advantage.
