PhD Research Fellow in physical oceanography

项目介绍

There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in physical oceanography at the Geophysical Institute. The position is affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year with career-promoting work (e.g. teaching at the Department).

We seek a motivated and highly qualified PhD candidate to join our team.

About the project/work tasks

The PhD-project will focus on the Antarctic slope front dynamics, with particular focus on the circulation near ice tongues overhanging the continental slope.

The PhD-candidate will set up and run idealised numerical experiments to study how the presence of an ice tongue modifies the slope front current dynamics and the heat flux into an ice shelf cavity further the south. The idealised modelling will be combined with analysis of in-situ observations (moored and shipboard measurements of velocity and hydrography) from the area around Trolltunga, an ice tongue extending northward from Fimbulisen in Dronning Maud Land.

The main supervisor will be Ass. Prof. Kjersti Daae (UiB). The PhD candidate will be enrolled and employed at the University of Bergen and work closely with our growing Antarctic research group at UiB and Dr. Tore Hattermann at the Norwegian Polar Institute. As a PhD-candidate at the Geophysical Institute, you will be affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR). BCCR is the largest climate research centre in the Nordic countries and among the leading centres in Europe. The working environment is highly international with around 200 scientists from 37 countries.

Qualifications and personal qualities

  • Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent education in physical oceanography, meteorology, climate dynamics, physics, applied mathematics, or related and relevant fields. Master students can apply provided they complete their final master exam before 30 June 2025. It is a condition of employment that the master’s degree has been awarded.
  • A good understanding of oceanic physical processes and dynamics is required.
  • Good skills in mathematics and scientific programming (ideally Python or Matlab) are required.
  • Experience in numerical modelling is an advantage.
  • Experience with time series analysis is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

The 4th year is contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department and will be decided by the head of department upon appointment.

The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a qualifying post (e.g. research fellow, research assistant).

About the research training
As a PhD Research Fellow, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. The deadline for applying for admission to the PhD programme at The Faculty of Science and Technology is 2 months after you start your position or after the start of the research project that will lead to the PhD degree. It is a condition that you satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen.
