The University Museum in Bergen has research, collection management and communication as its core tasks. The museum covers several disciplines: Anthropology, Archaeology, Art and Cultural history, Botany, Geology and Zoology. The museum is also responsible for the archaeological excavations in accordance with regulations of the Cultural Heritage Act, as well as for the Arboretum and two botanical gardens. The University Museum has extensive scientific collections and is a central arena for research communication for UiB. The museum has a little less than 200 employees. The Research section is a unit under the Department of Cultural History. The department has 29 permanent employees (14 academic positions, 15 technical/administrative positions). In addition, there are a varying number of temporary employees, including 4 PhD positions.

The Department of Cultural History, University Museum, University of Bergen, invites applicants for a PhD in archaeology, with starting date as soon as possible. The deadline for applicants is the 15th of January 2025. The duration of the PhD position is 4 years, of which 25 percent of the time comprises obligatory duties at the University Museum.

The successful applicant will join the research section at The Cultural History department, at the University Museum in Bergen. Besides research, the Department is responsible for archaeological excavations and cultural heritage management in the county of Vestland counties, as well as Sunnmøre. The museum´s archaeological collections consist of remains from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages, when Bergen had become one of the Nordic countries’ largest international trading cities. Between these two extremes in time, the sources shed light on cultural, technological and societal development over several thousand years, with the diverse landscape of Western Norway as a prominent research arena. In addition to artefacts, the collections contain a large archive of photographic material and documentation from archaeological investigations carried out over the past 150 years.

About the project/work tasks:

It is compulsory that the applicant defines her or his project within the field of archeology and how it relates to the University Museum’s collections and archives. The project will be assessed in light of the research expertise of the Research Section. The supervisor will be a permanently employed researcher at the section. Applicants must have had contact with a supervisor before applying, and the application must be confirmed by the potential supervisor. The supervisor´s name must appear clearly on the application.

Qualifications and personal qualities the applicant should possess: 

  • Applicants must have a Norwegian master’s degree in archaeology, or an equivalent foreign degree with a subject area that is relevant to the PhD-project. Applicants without a Norwegian master’s degree, will be assessed according to the current requirements from the Directorate for Higher Education and Skills ( Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills | HK-dir
  • It is a prerequisite for employment that the master’s degree has been awarded before the deadline of the application. 
  • Ability to work independently and in a well-structured manner, and good cooperative skills 
  • Written and oral proficiency in a Scandinavian language and in English 
  • Candidates who have previously held a doctoral scholarship at UiB cannot apply 

About the PhD position:

About the PhD position: 
The main aim of scholarship positions is to achieve a PhD-degree, which qualifies for independent research and for other work that requires high skill and special competence. The position is for 4 years, where 25% of the time is compulsory work linked to museum work, communication, and administration. A plan for this part of the position will be agreed upon appointment with the supervisor and Head of Department.

The applicant must have the ability to work independently, in a well-structured manner, and with high collaborative skills. If two or more of the ranked applicants otherwise are equally qualified, strategic considerations, personal motivation, and personal suitability will be decisive.

About the research training:
As a PhD candidate you must participate in the Faculty of Humanities’ educational programme. The programme consists of completing a training component of 30 ECTS, annual progress reporting and an approved midway evaluation.   • A research proposal (up to five pages, not including references) including: 
    • a short abstract summarizing the project, and what new knowledge it will gain 
    • a description of the relevant research context 
    • its main objectives, research questions; and, if applicable, hypotheses 
    • its theoretical approach, empirical materials, and methodology 
    • A well-prepared progress plan for the project 
    • Literature and references

  • Confirmation from the head supervisor, for the proposed doctoral project, who is a permanent archaeologist at the Research Section, Department of Cultural History, University Museum in Bergen 
  • Curriculum Vitae 
  • The names and contact information of two references. One of these must be the main advisor for the master’s thesis or equivalent. 
  • A short summary of the master’s thesis or equivalent thesis (no more than three pages). If your master’s degree is not from a Norwegian university, you may be asked to submit the full master’s thesis
  • Transcripts and diplomas showing completion of relevant bachelor’s and master’s degrees
  • List of any academic publications (publication list)
  • Relevant certificates

If original higher education certificates, transcripts and diplomas are not issued in English, Norwegian, Swedish or Danish, certified translations to either of the a forementioned languages must be included.
