As a PhD Candidate with us, you will work to achieve your doctorate, and at the same time gain valuable experience that qualifies you for a further career in higher education and research, in and outside academia.
The NTNU Marine Chemistry & Biogeochemistry Group within the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Technology, offers a PhD Candidate position as part of the EU-funded DiverSea project. This initiative addresses the urgent need for integrated, cost-effective coastal and marine ecosystem mapping and monitoring, employing innovative methods such as citizen science, remote sensing, nucleic acid analyses, in situ sensors, robotics, and big data computational approaches within a transdisciplinary systems framework.
Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department.
About the project
The DiverSea project aims to develop a comprehensive approach for monitoring and mapping that highlights the interactions between primary and secondary drivers, stressors, and the decline of functional biodiversity. The project seeks to bridge data gaps and enhance understanding of how biodiversity is linked to biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem functions.
Duties of the position
- Conduct research to identify and characterize critical biogeochemical indicators that signal the primary drivers and stressors affecting biodiversity in European coastal waters.
- Collaborate with marine biologists and experts in monitoring technology to develop and apply advanced observation methods.
- Use conventional and emerging autonomous systems to monitor and map biodiversity.
- Participate in international cooperation and contribute to fieldwork campaigns, including research cruises.
- Work with a multidisciplinary team to integrate data collection and analysis in a systems framework.
- Since the position is part of a major EU Horizon project, the candidate should actively participate in administrative tasks related to the coordination of DiverSea.
Required selection criteria
- You must have an academically relevant background within marine biogeochemical processes, oceanography, marine chemistry, or a related field.

- You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master’s degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be considered if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
- You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty’s Doctoral Programme (https://www.ntnu.edu/nv/phd)
- Experience in fieldwork and laboratory techniques, particularly related to phytoplankton research and the use of autonomous monitoring systems.
- Strong data analysis skills, including experience with large marine datasets, data visualization, and statistical analysis.
- Good written and spoken proficiency in English.
- Familiarity with marine sensors, observation systems, and sampling techniques.
