About the job
Applications are invited for a 3-year position in a Research Fellowship as PhD Candidate in Structural biology and Chromatin to be based at the Department of Molecular Medicine, Division of Biochemistry, University of Oslo.
The Research fellowship is funded by the University of Oslo and will be linked to the research group “Structural biology and chromatin” led by Associate Professor Nikolina Sekulic.
More about the position
The fellowship period is 3 years and devoted to carrying out a project entitled “Spindle-associated protein BuGZ – mode of action and development of anti-mitotic drug“. The project aims at understanding the role of BuGZ in chromatin during mitosis and kinetochore formation. We use various biochemical and biophysical approaches (cryo-EM, X-ray crystallography, SAXS, SANS, hydrogen-deuterium exchange). In addition, we collaborate with cell biology groups to link structure with function.
The research fellow must take part in the faculty’s approved PhD program and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.
The applicant must, in collaboration with her/his supervisor, within 3 months after employment, have worked out a complete project description to be attached to the application for admission to the doctoral program. Qualification requirements
- Applicants must hold a master’s degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent in biochemistry or similar with minimum grade B (ECTS grading scale) or equivalent. The Master’s degree must include a thesis of at least 30 ECTS
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
In addition, the following qualifications will be considered positively
- Experience in gene technology methods such as PCR, DNA isolation, gene cloning, sequence analysis, mutagenesis
- Competence in production and purification of recombinant proteins in bacterial and insect cells
- Experience in proteomics techniques such as mass spectrometry (in particular hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry – HDX-MS)
- Experience with graphical programs for protein analysis (Pymol, ChimeraX…) and with working in the terminal window
