The PhD programme is a small highly selective programme geared towards training students to become leading marketing faculty in the top tiered research focused schools. The programme is focused on developing marketing faculty that can conduct rigorous and relevant research focused on understanding and predicting marketing actions of firms and managers and the behaviour of consumers. To this end, the programme will admit only a limited number of students every year. The learning experience will be based on course work across SMU, close collaboration with the marketing faculty, and exposure to world renowned marketing faculty who will offer advanced research topic courses to the marketing PhD students. In addition, PhD students will be able to leverage the resources of SMU’s world class research institutes and centres, such as the Center for Marketing Excellence (https://www.smu.edu.sg/centres/cme/), the Behavioral Science Institute (https://bsi.smu.edu.sg/), Institute for Service Excellence (https://ise.smu.edu.sg/) and the Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics (https://skbi.smu.edu.sg/).
Students are encouraged to complete the programme in 4 years.
The minimum duration of the programme is three years. Most students, however, are expected to take about four years to complete the programme. The maximum registration duration of the programme is five years, unless special approval for a longer duration is given by SMU.
The curriculum consists of
6 Foundation courses (6 course units)
