The Department of Chinese Studies at the Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies at the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, is looking for a 

Pre-Doctoral Researcher 
(m/f/d, 50 %, E13 TV-L). 

The position is limited to three years (extension possible) and should be filled as soon as possible (May 1, 2027). 

Job description: 

• conduct a PhD research project  
• teach university classes and seminars of 2 SWS per semester in the program of Sinology/Chinese Studies, particularly in Classical Chinese
• assist in the administration and organization of the Department of Chinese Studies, incl. student counseling, organization of teaching and other department activities 

Who we are looking for: 

You are required to have (1) a completed MA-level university degree (Master/Magister/Diplom) in Sinology/Chinese Studies with an excellent academic record by the time of employment. A university degree in (Global) History or other related disciplines with a focus on China (also Greater China) from the tenth to the twentieth century can also qualify. Please explain your academic qualifications and language skills for pursuing a PhD in the discipline of Chinese Studies in the cover letter.  (2) Excellent proficiency in English as well as in modern and classical Chinese.  

Further desirable are: 

• A strong interest and experience in one of the following fields: social and cultural history, environmental history, history of medicine, history of knowledge, global history, history of science and technology, and digital humanities.
• Experience studying abroad in China (also Greater China)
• Ability to work with self-initiative and independently in a team of researchers
• German language skills
