Postdoctoral Research Fellow position
There is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position within marine microbiology at the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Bergen. The position is for a fixed term of 4 years and is associated with the research project VireVapp (Deciphering virus–host coevolution across the domains of life) which is funded by the FRIPRO program at Research Council Norway (RCN).
About the project/work tasks:
The project will investigate coevolution between viruses and hosts by using a marine system as model system consisting of Haptophytes and their giant viruses. The successful candidate will work with cultures of these microalgae and viruses in laboratory experiments. The work includes the use of both classical and molecular tools. Using bioinformatics, coevolution dynamics will further be investigated in natural environments and across different life domains.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
- Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree (PhD) within marine microbiology. PhD-students may apply if defence of the PhD-thesis is completed by 01.09.26. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
- Experience from cultural experiments/work with algal virus-host systems is a requirement
- It is also a requirement to have extensive experience within marine microbial ecology, including viral ecology and/or evolution.
- Experience with bioinformatics including transcriptomics is an advantage.
- Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others.
- Applicants must have good written and oral English skills.
Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.
Special requirements for the position
The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.
About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:
The position of postdoctoral fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. The fixed term period for this position is 4 years. Candidates who lack teaching experience and/or other relevant qualifications will be given the opportunity to undertake qualifying work, constituting up to 25% of the total period of employment.
Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral fellow at the same institution. In accordance with the Research Council’s rules, nor can anyone be hired more than once as an NFR-financed postdoctoral research fellow.
For postdoctoral research fellow positions associated with externally financed projects, the completion of the project proposal for the qualifying work, as well as a progress plan, will be developed in cooperation with the supervisor and head of department.
It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.

Further salary increases are made according to the length of service in the position. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well-qualified applicant.
