Postdoctoral Research Fellow (3 positions)

Three (3) full-time positions as postdoctoral research fellow are available at the Faculty of Medicine for a fixed-term period of three (3) years, commencing on February 2027.

About the project/work tasks:

The postdoctoral research fellow may be assigned required duties at the department or at the faculty level. Such duties may include teaching, examination-related work, supervision of students, contributions to the Medical Student Research Programme, or teaching in the introductory research methodology course (MEDMET) for PhD candidates. The language of instruction is generally Norwegian, while teaching at PhD level is typically conducted in English.

The positions will be affiliated with the relevant department, depending on the research project. To be eligible for appointment, applicants must be affiliated with a research environment other than the one in which they completed their PhD degree.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

• Applicants must have completed a Norwegian PhD or equivalent foreign education, or have their doctoral thesis approved within the closing date of  the application. It is a condition for appointment that the public defence is completed and the degree is approved before appointment. 
• The postdoctoral research fellow must be fluent in oral and written English.Evaluation of applicants:
• Applicants are evaluated based on the following criteria:
•  Applicant: The applicant’s competence and relevant professional activity. A planned stay abroad in the post-doctoral period will be valued positively.
• Project: The scientific value of the project, in addition to its feasibility within the framework of a postdoctoral fellowship.
• Research environment: The research environment’s ability to develop the candidate, relevant research activity. The mentor must be employed at the Faculty of Medicine throughout the postdoctoral employment period.

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

A position as postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the successful candidate for work in top academic positions. According to the applicable regulations, a person may not be employed as a postdoctoral fellow for more than one fixed-term period at the same institution. Therefore, applicants who have previously held a postdoctoral position at UiB are not eligible for appointment to this position.

The appointment period is three years. The employment period may be extended by up to one year, to a maximum of four years, if it includes a research stay abroad. Such a research stay must have a duration of more than six months and may exceed one year. However, the total period of employment cannot exceed four years. The research stay abroad must be completed no later than six months before the end of the employment period.

From the mentor: 

1. Mentor statement explaining the applicant’s potential for an academic career, and how the mentor and the research group can facilitate the candidate’s development as an independent researcher, aiming for an academic career. Please note that only one application from each mentor will be considered. 

2. The mentor’s CV (max 3 pages). Use the template found here. 

3. Mentor’s supervision experience (master and PhD level). This document should also include an overview of the names, start dates and expected leave dates for PhDs and postdoctoral fellows currently supervised by the mentor (both as main supervisor and co-supervisor), that are funded by the Faculty of Medicine.  Please see the guidelines for the number of University of Bergen funded candidates that can be supervised/mentored by the same person. (A supervisor or mentor may not supervise more than four (4) PhD and/or postdoctoral candidates funded by the faculty at the same time. The mentor must hold a primary position at the Faculty of Medicine. Exceptions may be made for individuals who hold a secondary appointment at the faculty and a primary position in a health trust within Helse Vest, at NORCE, or in the primary healthcare services in Western Norway.
