About the position

A postdoctoral position is available in the Autophagy group at the Department of Molecular Cell Biology, Institute of Cancer Research, Oslo University Hospital. The position is also affiliated with the Centre for Cancer Cell Reprogramming (CanCell), Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Oslo.

The position is funded by the Research Council of Norway to work on the project “CancER-phagy – Unravelling and targeting ER-phagy in cancer”.

The proposed starting date is 01.01.2027, and the position is for a period of 3 years.

Project description

Most cancer cells exhibit persistent endoplasmic reticulum stress, which promotes tumour growth, metastasis and resistance to therapies. Stressed endoplasmic reticulum is cleared by a pathway known as “ER-phagy”, yet it remains unclear how ER-phagy dysregulation contributes to cancer progression. Using image-based siRNA screens, we have identified novel regulators of ER-phagy. This project aims to investigate the molecular mechanisms of ER-phagy and how this contributes to cancer progression.

The successful candidate should have extensive experience from experimental laboratory work in molecular cell biology using techniques such as cell culture, CRISPR/Cas9 based genome editing, protein expression and interaction analysis, light microscopy and/or cancer assays. Prior experience in the autophagy or intracellular trafficking fields is considered an advantage. 

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with the ability to work in an accurate and structured manner to carry out the project within the given timeframe. The candidate should be able to work both independently and collaboratively, and be able to effectively interpret and communicate research results. The candidate may also have the opportunity to supervise students.

Qualification requirements 

Qualification requirements

• Candidates must have a PhD equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in cell biology, molecular biology or equal. Successful candidates must have submitted their doctoral thesis prior to the application closing date. 
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
• Strong background in molecular cell biology.
• Experience with cell culture, CRISPR/Cas9 based genome editing, protein expression and interaction analysis, light microscopy and/or cancer assays.

Preferred skills

• Background in autophagy or intracellular trafficking field is an advantage.

Personal skills 

• Highly motivated and dedicated.
• Ability to work in an accurate and structured manner.

• Ability to critically assess and interpret research results.
• Proficient communication and presentation skills.
