Postdoctoral Fellow in Language Technology at the Department of Linguistic, Literary, and Aesthetic Studies

We are seeking a motivated and academically strong candidate for a position as Postdoctoral Fellow in Language Technology at the Centre for Norwegian Professional Language, hosted by the Department of Linguistic, Literary, and Aesthetic Studies. The planned starting date is August 2026 or as agreed upon. The position is for a fixed-term period of three years. 

The postdoctoral position is part of Work Package 5, which focuses on developing language technologies. The candidate is expected to take an active part in the centre and contribute to achieving the goals of the work package, in close collaboration with Work package 1 on terminology and professional language in particular, and the centre as a whole.

About the Department

The Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies employs an academic staff of 80, 17 administrative staff, and about 40 PhD candidates and postdoctoral fellows. We offer study programmes in Art History, Classical philology, Comparative Literature, Digital Culture, Linguistics, Norwegian as a Secondary Language, Old Norse Philology, Scandinavian Studies, Theatre Studies, and Norwegian language courses for international students and employees at the University of Bergen. The Department is also the proud host of two research centres, the Centre for Digital Narrative (CDN) and the Centre for Norwegian Professional Language. It also holds responsibility for three of the most significant dictionaries of the Norwegian language.

About the Centre for Norwegian Professional Language

The Centre for Norwegian Professional Language is a national initiative funded by the Research Council of Norway. Its goal is to coordinate a long-term national effort in Norwegian language research, development, and education in terminology and professional language, workplace language, lexicography, onomastics,and language technology. The Centre will recruit several PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers and will collaborate with scholars both nationally and internationally.  

Centre partners include Østfold University College, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Volda University College, NTNU, the University of Agder, the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, Helse Vest RHF and the Institute for Language and Folklore (Sweden), in addition to national and international institutions both within and outside the university and university college sector.

About the postdoctoral position

The postdoctoral position is aimed towards qualifying for academic top-level positions.  

The successful applicant must prepare a career plan that specifies the competencies the postdoctoral fellow is expected to acquire, in collaboration with the Department at the very beginning of the employment period. 

Qualifications and personal qualities

The applicant must:

  • have a Norwegian doctoral degree (PhD) or an equivalent foreign degree in language technology computational linguistics, Natural Language Processing (NLP), machine learning, or other relevant areas within computer science and artificial intelligence, but with a clearly NLP-focused dissertation. The doctoral dissertation must have been submitted prior to the application deadline, and the PhD degree must be obtained prior to appointment.
  • have the ability to work independently and in a structured manner, combined with strong collaborative skills.
  • be highly motivated, and problem-solving oriented.
  • have excellent oral and written skills in English.
  • have a strong research record in NLP, demonstrated through publications in leading NLP channels.
  • have a broad knowledge of core NLP tasks.
  • have a comprehensive understanding of modern neural machine learning methods and architectures in NLP, including both theoretical foundations and hands‑on experience.

Desirable qualifications

  • experience working in high‑performance computing (HPC) environments.
  • prior experience with post-training, fine-tuning, or training of large language models (LLMs).
  • knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language. 

Applicants must submit a project proposal (see “How to apply” below), which should demonstrate how the proposed project will contribute to the research in the work package and support the broader ambitions of the centre. The project proposal must include a progress plan for the project’s key activities and a plan for publishing results in internationally recognised channels.

In assessing the applications, emphasis will be placed on the academic quality and feasibility of the proposed project and the applicant’s academic qualifications. Further emphasis will be placed on strategic considerations, motivation, and personal suitability.

    • Personal details.

    • At least two references, one of whom must be the main supervisor of your doctoral dissertation.

    • A project proposal of up to 12.000 characters including spaces (excluding bibliography). The project proposal should clearly describe the research project, including research background, main research questions, theoretical framework, methodology, ethical considerations and the empirical material to be used in the project. A bibliography for the proposal must be included.  
    • A progress plan for the project and a plan for publication in internationally recognised channels.  
    • Transcripts and diplomas for your bachelor’s and master’s degrees, uploaded from the Diploma Registry (Vitnemålsportalen). If these are not available through the registry, upload them as regular files. 
    • Documentation verifying that the doctoral degree has been awarded, or documentation confirming that the doctoral dissertation has been submitted for assessment.  
    • A brief summary of the PhD thesis (up to three pages).  
    • List of any academic publications (publication list).  
    • Up to five complete academic publications (may include theses, monographs and articles) that are to be given special consideration in the assessment of your academic qualifications.  
    • Relevant certificates documenting your qualifications, skills, experience or qualities.

The application text, CV, and attachments must be submitted in Norwegian, another Scandinavian language or English. Documents in other languages must be accompanied by certified translations.
