Postdoc in energy modelling for bicyclists

项目介绍

Job description

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher in vehicle or traffic engineering, with a focus on the longitudinal dynamics of cyclists. The work includes modeling, numerical analysis, and experimental validation of cyclist speed over given routes.

The background: When designing infrastructure, costs are crucial and can be estimated quite well. In contrast, user benefits in terms of reduced travel time and energy expenditure for, e.g., commuting cyclists are rarely considered. As a result, aspects such as making a cycle path accessible to residential areas that are currently beyond the time threshold people are willing to invest are not considered in evaluations.

An applicable and detailed model of the longitudinal dynamics of cyclists is therefore the focus of this work. The motivation is to provide insights into where energy expenditure is highest and where efficiency improvements can have the greatest impact. By doing so, this work aims to contribute to a better understanding and optimization of cycling environments to enable a more sustainable transportation system. The aim of this project is to create a model that generates performance indices—namely travel time, average bicycle speed, and energy expenditure for the cyclist population. These indices can be monetized to make variants of infrastructure solutions comparable, enabling a comprehensive view during decision-making.

The position includes conducting independent research, publishing in international scientific journals, contributing to project development, and collaborating with our public collaboration partners, other researchers, and students in the group.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • Documented research expertise and ability to publish in international scientific journals.

  • Strong programming skills in Python or MATLAB.
  • Very good communication skills in English, both written and spoken, since the research environment, scientific publishing and collaboration are international.

Personal skills

As a person, you have strong collaborative ability, a high degree of independence and a structured way of working. You demonstrate:

  • Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary setting.

Preferred qualifications

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
  • Strong background in field measurements.
  • Strong background in automated picture recognition.
  • Strong background in machine learning, statistical modeling, and big-data analytics.
  • Experience with infrastructure or transportation data or traffic planning (e.g. micro-simulation) or urban planning.
  • Good communicative skills in Swedish, both spoken and written for the day to day work with project partners and field work.
  • Teaching experience is an advantage.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
