Postdoc in characterisation of Helicobacter pylori proteins

项目介绍

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 58 000 students and 6800 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology conducts high-quality research and education in chemical sciences and molecular life sciences. Our research and education focuses on a deep understanding of chemical and biological processes in cells and in the environment. We are responsible for postgraduate education in the subject area Natural Sciences with a focus on chemistry, biophysics, biology and educational science. In addition, the department hosts educational programs in molecular biology, genomics and systems biology, chemistry, organic chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry, as well as prescription education. The department is an international environment with interdisciplinary collaborations in both research and education and contributes strongly to the University of Gothenburg’s top ranking in life science. We are located in central premises at Natrium, Medicinareberget, Gothenburg.

The Kaisa Thorell group is studying Helicobacter pylori and host-microbe interaction focusing on bioinformatic analysis of bacterial omics data. H. pylori is a bacterium that chronically colonizes the stomach of almost half the world’s population and that can cause ulcers and gastric cancer. H. pylori’s resistance to antibiotics is rapidly increasing and more knowledge is needed in terms of virulence and colonization mechanisms and the bacterial interaction with the gastric mucosa.

Dr Thorell is a fellow within the Swedish Data Driven Life Science (DDLS) program and the groups work is centered on large datasets of for example whole genome sequences of bacteria from different parts of the world and with different level of disease association and also work with characterization of bacterial isolates and their interaction with human cells using RNA-seq, proteomics, glycomics, and other large scale data analyses.

Duties

The focus of the position will be to characterize a newly discovered ancient ecospecies of Helicobacter pylori that we recently identified in regions of high gastric cancer risk. The position’s main focus will be on characterization of outer membrane proteins involved in host-microbe interaction including microbial adhesion and the ability to bind different host cell ligands.

Qualifications

To be eligible for appointment as a postdoctoral researcher, an applicant must have obtained a doctoral degree, or a foreign qualification deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met by the time the appointment decision is made. Preference should be given to applicants who obtained their doctoral degree no more than three years prior to the closing date for applications. In exceptional circumstances, the doctoral degree may have been obtained earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Previous experience in culturing Helicobacter pylori with a focus on outer membrane proteins and their gene regulation.
  • Previous experience in molecular biology techniques for assessing gene expression.
  • Previous experience in co-culture of Helicobacter pylori with other bacteria and/or host cells.
  • Previous experience in expression and characterization of bacterial outer membrane proteins in various systems.
  • For the position, it is required that you have very good oral and written communication skills in English in your daily work.

Meritorious:

As a person you are highly motivated and able to work both independently and collaboratively with well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills.

The group is young with engaged and ambitious colleagues as well as a creative, international and dynamic working environment. We have strong emphasis on cooperation, and where you will have the possibilities of taking part in and contribute with your experience to several other projects.

The applicant is expected to contribute to the research profile of the group. Ability to attract funding, a good publication record and experience of international collaborations is a merit. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability and ability to collaborate.

Employment

The position is fixed-term for 2 years on a full-time basis (100%) with placement at the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Gothenburg. Start in August 2026.
