Besides commitment to excellence in undergraduate education, the staff of the Physics Department are engaged in active research in many areas of physics. The Research Divisions of Physics and Astronomy has been established, and Prof. H.K. Lo is the Director of the Division. The division offers both M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs for full-time postgraduate students.  There are five major areas of researches that are being conducted in Research Division of Physics and Astronomy. They are:

1. Astronomy and Astrophysics Group
2. Atomic, Optical and Quantum Physics Group
3. Experimental Condensed Matter and Material Science Group
4. Theoretical and Computational Condensed Matter Group
5. Experimental Nuclear and Particle Physics Group

 In addition, the division also hosts one Area of Excellence Project & a HKU-UCAS Joint Institute of Theoretical and Computational Physics, and leads the Laboratory for Space Research.
