Are you passionate about advancing electric power technology? Join us to innovate high-performance traction inverters for heavy-duty vehicle drivetrains!
Information about the division and the department
The Department of Electrical Engineering is committed to fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and creative working environment. We value diversity in gender, backgrounds, and abilities, encouraging everyone to apply. Our goal is to create a positive societal impact – environmentally, socially, and economically.
The Division of Electric Power Engineering conducts cutting-edge research in electric power technology, driven by theoretical and experimental foundations. Research activities are organized into two units: power grids and components and electrical machines and power electronics, with interdisciplinary collaboration across the university and with external partners.
The Electrical Machines and Power Electronics Unit focuses on five key areas:
- Electrical machines
- Power electronic converters
- Energy storage
- Charging technologies
- Propulsion systems
With a team of 25 researchers, including many PhD students, we provide a supportive and dynamic environment for innovation and development
Your Role
As a PhD student, your primary responsibility will be research and development of design and control methods for long-lifetime traction inverters used in heavy-duty vehicle drivetrains. These inverters require higher efficiency, power density, and durability compared to those used in passenger vehicles. Your research will involve:
- Developing loss and thermal models for high-frequency inverters.
- Designing adaptive switching frequency techniques, dv/dt filters, winding insulation enhancements, and switch balancing methods.
- Combining fast circuit simulations and slow system simulations to study high-speed drive systems.
- Prototyping and experimental testing of high-power SiC inverters.
Teaching Responsibilities:
Teaching tasks, up to 20% of your time, are an integral part of the doctoral program. These may include leading exercises or assisting in labs for bachelor or master courses. Teaching skill development is part of your training. To qualify for a doctoral degree at the end of the employment, one needs also to complete 60 study credits from different courses, and publish high-quality academic papers based on your research findings.

Qualifications
To succeed in this role, you should have:
- Required:
- A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in electrical engineering with a focus on power electronics and control.
- In-depth knowledge of power electronics, especially traction inverters and DC/DC converters.
- Proficiency with design and simulation tools such as Simulink, LT-Spice, Ansys Maxwell, or Comsol.
- Practical experience in prototyping and testing power electronics and drive systems.
- Meritorious:
- Knowledge of electromagnetics, electrical machines, hardware design, or CAD.
- Experience in academic publications.
- Collaborative spirit and strong interpersonal skills.
Contract terms
