The research group “Spatial Development and Urban Policy – SPUR” at the Institute for Spatial and Landscape Development under the direction of Prof. Dr. David Kaufmann invites applications for a PhD student in the field of social sciences for social-ecological urban transformation.
Project background
Are you eager to shape the cities of tomorrow? We are looking for a PhD student who conducts research in the Swiss National Science Foundation National Research Program 81 funded project “Beyond Replacement Construction: Implementing the Socio-Ecological Transformation of the Swiss Built Environment”. The project focuses on the socio-ecological transformation of the built environment in Swiss cities through soft densification (i.e., vertical extensions, building an annex, infill development etc.) as a sustainable alternative to hard densification (i.e. demolition and total renovation). In Swiss cities, the current implementation of hard densification strategies often results in significant socio-environmental challenges, particularly in terms of displacement and social exclusion of low-income residents and increased CO2 emissions from construction activities.
Job description
In particular, this PhD research project examines:
- The socio-spatial vulnerability to hard densification of population groups living in older housing stock through statistical socio-spatial analysis
- The acceptance of local residents of soft densification measures and their assessment of decision-makers through survey research and interviews
- Transformation workshops with local residents and decision-makers that integrate the findings of the project
The research project thus integrates frameworks from socio-ecological transformation studies, planning research, public opinion and public policy literature. Methodologically, we use a variety of social science methods, in particular statistical socio-spatial analysis and mapping, survey research (including survey experiments and visualizations), as well as semi-structured interviews and focus group research.
Profile
- A Master’s degree (or near completion of) in a social science (political science, sociology, etc.) or spatial science discipline (planning, urban studies, geography, etc.)
- Strong interest and curiosity in issues of urban planning and urban sustainability transformations
- Good knowledge of quantitative and qualitative social science methods and a strong interest in further developing these methodological skills
- Motivation to pursue an academic career
- Good active command of English (oral and written) and a good passive command of German and French
- Knowledge of the Swiss planning and political system is an asset
