Subject area: Computational and experimental studies of the influence of microstructure on the high-temperature structural integrity of austenitic stainless steels
Subject area description: Structural integrity of materials is of primary concern in sustainable mechanical design, as more durable products impose longer product lives and allow the usage of less material. Accounting for structural integrity in the design process calls for a technical model of the product concept, i.e., mathematical models of the product and its in-service environment, which inevitably must incorporate the influence of the material and its properties. This research position focuses on computational approaches to assess the influence of the material microstructure on the high-temperature structural integrity, incorporated in technical models, intended to support design decisions related to manufacturing and process parameter selections of components in the energy and automotive industries.
Duties: The PhD student will develop and apply computational methods incorporating machine learning and micromechanics to predict the influence of microstructural features on the high-temperature structural integrity of austenitic stainless steel, e.g., resistance to inelastic deformation and crack growth. Responsibilities include the design and implementation of finite-element multiscale models and machine learning algorithms, performing and analyzing related high-temperature mechanical testing, as well as collaborating with industrial collaborators to validate computational predictions. Based on this work, the PhD student contributes to manuscript preparation of scientific articles and present findings at scientific conferences, as part of an interdisciplinary research group.
The work is performed in connection to an ongoing research project “From Nickel-base Superalloys to Austenitic Stainless Steels: Alloying, Design and Material Modelling for High-temperature Structural Integrity”, involving multiple industrial partners in Sweden.
As PhD student, you will principally carry out research. A certain amount of teaching may be part of your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working hours., e.g., lab assistance, exam correction, classroom teaching, student supervision etc.
Your qualifications
To be qualified to take employment, you must have graduated at Master’s level in Mechanical Engineering or Material Science and Engineering, or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in Mechanical Engineering or Material Science and Engineering. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.
Good programming skills and finite element (FE) analysis experience is a requirement. Knowledge of machine learning, Matlab and Abaqus is also highly desired. While not required, experience from microstructural modelling, automation of FE models via scripting and user-defined material modelling is desirable. Furthermore, excellent communicative skills are required, including fluency in oral and written English.
In order to succeed as doctoral studies, the candidate must be goal oriented and persevering in his or her work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to independently pursue his or her work, collaborate with others, have a professional approach and analyse complex matters.
