The section for Slavic studies is part of the Department of Slavic and Baltic Studies, Finnish, Dutch, and German. The department has approximately 50 employees and over 1500 students per academic year. Teaching within the section for Slavic studies is focused on four Slavic languages (Polish, Russian, Czech and Ukrainian), their literatures and cultures. The main research areas are modern linguistics, literary studies and cultural studies.

Specific areas of research include: Polish, Russian, Czech and Ukrainian literary history and theory with an emphasis on modern and contemporary literature, translation studies, gender studies, the theory and literature of cultural memory, cultural history and the history of ideas; corpus-based studies in Russian and Czech grammatical and lexical semantics, Russian and Czech contrastive linguistics – especially in comparison with Swedish or other Slavic languages; Russian and Slavic aspectology; discourse analysis.

Subject area
The Department of Slavic and Baltic Studies, Finnish, Dutch, and German announces 1–2 fully funded doctoral positions in Slavic languages with a focus on three Slavic languages (Polish, Russian and Czech) in the fields of modern linguistics, literary studies, translation studies and cultural studies.

As a doctoral student at the Department of Slavic and Baltic Studies, Finnish, Dutch, and German, you have to opportunity to take part in the courses and activities offered by the Faculty of Humanities’ doctoral school. It is distinguished by courses that promote multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary cooperation. Additionally, the doctoral school provides a valuable opportunity for you to expand your academic horizons and enrich your subject-specific knowledge through interaction with a diverse community of doctoral students from various disciplines and departments.

Qualification requirements
In order to be admitted to postgraduate education, the applicant must have the general and specific entry requirements. The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

You meet general entry requirements if you have completed a second-cycle degree, or completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

Specific entry requirements are described in the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of Slavic languages.

To meet the specific entry requirements, the general syllabus stipulates that:

  • the applicant has completed courses at an advanced level of at least 30 ECTS credits in the Slavic language chosen as the main language (Polish, Russian or Czech), including a thesis of at least 15 ECTS credits, with satisfactory results.
  • the applicant has passed courses of at least 7.5 credits in a Slavic language other than the main Slavic language.
  • the applicant must have knowledge of English and either have or commit to promptly seek to acquire knowledge of Swedish, Danish, or Norwegian. Language proficiency must include the ability to read, speak, and write in these languages.

Selection
The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity:

  • The applicant’s documented subject knowledge relevant to the research area
  • The applicant’s ability to express oneself verbally and in writing in the Slavic language chosen as the main language (Polish, Russian or Czech) at a level necessary to complete the doctoral studies
  • The applicant’s ability to analytical thinking, creativity, own initiative, and independence
  • The applicant’s ability to cooperate
  • The relevance, originality, and feasibility of the research plan (see below)
  • The applicant’s documented ability to complete tasks within the allotted timeframe
  • The available supervisory expertise.

As a basis for the assessment, previous studies and grades, the quality of independent work, references, relevant experience, interviews, and the applicant’s written motivation for the application are used. In connection with the application, the applicant shall briefly account for his or her intended research area in a research plan. The account shall include the formulation of the problem(s) and an outline of the implementation of the research work. The plan is assessed with regard to relevance, originality, and feasibility within a given time frame (i.e., during a period equivalent to four years of full-time education).

About the post
We offer a fixed-term employment as a doctoral student according to Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). The period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. As a doctoral student, you should primarily devote yourself to your own doctoral education, but the employment may include work with education, research and administration to a limited extent (maximum 20 %).

A new employment as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, the employment is then renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
