Your workplace
The position is placed at the Division of Algebra, Geometry and Discrete Mathematics (ALGD), which consists of about twenty teachers, researchers and doctoral students. Our research focuses on a number of different subject areas such as algebra, geometry, topology, combinatorics and graph theory.
Your work assignments
As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.
Research will be conducted in one of the areas that are represented at ALGD. An overview of the research areas at the division can be found on the department’s homepage https://liu.se/en/organisation/liu/mai/algd . The successful applicant is encouraged to acquaint himself/herself with the research areas that are represented at the divisions and give a motivation of which area(s) you are interested in.
Your qualifications
You have graduated at Master’s level in mathematics or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in mathematics, alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way. Among these 60 credits on advanced level at least 30 should consist of an independent exam project. The requirements for this PhD position must be met at the latest at the time of the final employment decision, which occurs when the employment contract is signed.
You should have a big interest in fundamental research. As a PhD student you need to have a strong ability to work independently, drive projects forward and tackle new research questions as they arise. Furthermore, you also need to have a strong ability to collaborate with others.
A Master thesis which is relevant for the position is meriting, as well as international experience.
Significant emphasis will also be placed on personal qualities and suitability.
Applicants must have very good communication skills, both oral and written, in English.
The employment
When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University
The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.
Starting date: August 2025 or by agreement.
