Project description

Project title: Advanced Light Microscopy for Multiple Sclerosis Research

The Computational Microscopy for Cell Biology (CMCB) laboratory, led by Assistant Prof. Juliette Griffié based at SciLifeLab, is recruiting a highly motivated PhD student for an interdisciplinary project in collaboration with Associate Prof. Nicolas Ruffin (Department of Clinical Neuroscience, co-supervisor) at Karolinska Institutet (KI).

The project aims to investigate the molecular and cellular drivers of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) using advanced light microscopy approaches, including super-resolution microscopy techniques. In particular, the research will focus on understanding the role and phenotype of B cells in MS. While B cells are now recognized as central players in disease progression and represent highly promising therapeutic targets, many aspects of their molecular organization and functional states remain poorly understood. By combining advanced imaging and quantitative analysis, this project seeks to uncover novel biological mechanisms underlying MS. The project sits at the intersection of immunology, advanced microscopy, and quantitative biology, and is particularly suited for candidates excited about addressing fundamental biomedical questions using cutting-edge imaging technologies.

We are seeking exceptional candidates with an MSc degree in biology, biochemistry, immunology, biophysics, bioengineering, or related disciplines. Strong hands-on experience in wet-lab experimental work is essential, particularly sample preparation for fluorescence microscopy. Prior experience with advanced light microscopy and immune cell culture is highly desirable. Experience with super-resolution microscopy, image analysis or programming is considered a strong advantage, but the primary focus of the position is experimental and microscopy-based expertise. A strong interest in MS research and immunology is essential.

The selected candidate will join a highly interdisciplinary and international research environment composed of physicists, engineers, biologists, biochemists, and computational scientists. The CMCB laboratory develops cutting-edge microscopy, computational, and AI-driven approaches to investigate biological systems across scales, ranging from molecular organization in cells to multimodal AI for biology and health. The project will vastly benefit from these close interactions between experimental biology, advanced imaging, and quantitative analysis within the research group.

The position is based at SciLifeLab in Stockholm (Campus Solna), one of Europe’s leading centers for data-driven life science and biomedical research. SciLifeLab provides a uniquely collaborative environment at the interface of biology, technology, and AI, with access to world-class microscopy infrastructure including advanced imaging platforms. This position is particularly well suited for ambitious students seeking to work at the frontier of microscopy and immunology in a highly dynamic and multidisciplinary research setting.

Qualification requirements

In order to be admitted to postgraduate education, the applicant must have the general and specific entry requirements. The qualification requirements must be met by the time the applicant is admitted to the PhD program at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics.

You meet general entry requirements if you have completed a second-cycle degree, or completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meet the specific entry requirements for acceptance in the Biophysics program, the applicant must have passed courses within the first and second cycles of at least 120 credits in Physics or Chemistry and at the second level, courses of at least 60 credits Biophysics, Biochemistry or Physical Chemistry including a 30 credit Degree Project (thesis).

Selection

The selection amongst the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to successfully complete the program. Important criteria when assessing this capacity are; documented knowledge and skill in the field of the thesis project, written and oral proficiency in English, the capacity for analytical thinking, the ability to collaborate, as well as creativity, initiative, and independence. The assessment will be based on previous experience and grades, the quality of the degree project, references, relevant experience, interviews and the candidate’s written motivation for seeking the position.

About the employment

We offer a fixed-term employment as a doctoral student according to Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). The period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. As a doctoral student, you should primarily devote yourself to your own doctoral education, but the employment may include work with education, research and administration to a limited extent (maximum 20 %).

A new employment as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, the employment is then renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.

Stockholm University strives to be a workplace free from discrimination and with equal opportunities for all.
