Job description
Advanced AI technologies increasingly encroach on domains traditionally occupied by expert professions – doctors, architects, and lawyers. While politicians, think tanks, and researchers highlight the potential for job savings, considerable research shows challenges in using AI in expert work. Through a novel approach integrating AI development and organizational science, AI:Xpertise lab researches the technical and organizational conditions for successfully embedding AI systems in expert work.
The lab is looking for candidates for the following four stipends:Stipend 1: PhD in AI for healthcare
This stipend revolves around building and deploying AI in health care. The main case will be automation of anesthetic pre-screenings. Potential auxiliary cases include evaluation of laparoscopic surgery and AI assistance for spinal surgery. Candidates for this stipend should have a background in software engineering or similar and have substantial experience with machine learning. All cases involve various degrees of image analysis, so computer vision experience is a requirement. Experience with large language models is a plus. Furthermore, as AI:Xpertise is about deploying AI in the real world, we are looking for people with full-stack experience: You should not only be able to create and evaluate models, you must also be able to build a user interface and deploy your systems. You must also be interested in collaborating with organizational researchers given the interdisciplinary character of AI:Xpertise.
Stipend 2: PhD in AI for architecture
This stipend revolves around building and deploying AI in architecture. The main case will be generative AI for architecture visualization, and possibly computer vision for understanding buildings. Candidates for this stipend should have a background in software engineering or similar and have substantial experience with machine learning. Experience with generative AI for image is a large advantage, and computer vision experience is a plus.
Stipend 3: PhD in organization studies focusing on generative AI in healthcare
Large language models (LLMs) and other generative AI technologies are beginning to play a growing role in healthcare, where they are used to support clinical decision-making and patient care. While these tools promise to augment medical expertise, their integration into clinical practice poses fundamental challenges that relate to differences between expert knowledge and algorithmic reasoning. Hence, AI technologies raise important questions about how professional expertise is developed, mobilized, and recognized, in high-risk domains like medicine. As part of the AI:Xpertise lab, this PhD stipend will explore how AI tools are integrated into clinical workflows, and investigate how healthcare professionals engage with these tools, how they navigate the uncertainties and constraints of algorithmic recommendations, and how organizational routines and professional expertise co-evolve alongside new technologies. We are ideally looking for a candidate with a background in organization studies, information systems, public administration, sociology, anthropology, science and technology studies, political science, management or other related social science or humanities disciplines.
Stipend 4: PhD in organization studies focusing on generative AI in professional servicesGenerative AI tools are, for example, increasingly used in professional services like architecture and consulting. In fact, tasks such as image production and text generation in professional services are considered to hold great promises for being augmented. Hence, professional expertise is changing within this context, and it raises critical questions about how expertise is developed, mobilized, and recognized in such professional services. As part of the AI:Xpertise lab, this stipend will investigate how generative AI systems can be developed and embedded into professional expert services. Thus, like stipend 3, the project combines organizational research with AI development, using a comparative approach to explore both technical and organizational aspects of AI in practice. We are ideally looking for a candidate with a background in organization studies, information systems, public administration, sociology, anthropology, science and technology studies, political science, management or other related social science or humanities disciplines.
Please clearly indicate at the top of your application which of the stipendts you are applying for. The application must include a brief description (maximum 1 page) of your motivation for the stipend(s), as well as a proposed research plan (maximum 2 pages).
We expect to conduct interviews for stipend 1 and 2 in week 21 and stipend 3 and 4 in week 22.
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master’s degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the relevant Doctoral School in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
As for the stipends 3 and 4, there is also an option to allocate integrated PhD stipends to individuals who have not yet completed a Master’s degree and wish to begin the PhD study in connection with the Master study. Hence, a prerequisite for this type of stipend is that the candidate is enrolled in a relevant Master’s programme at AAU. Stipends of this type consist of two parts: A and B. During part A candidates are enrolled simultaneously in the Master’s programme and in the PhD programme. The stipend consists of two SU-PhD grants per month (SU= The Danish students’ Grants and Loans Scheme). One SU-PhD grant equals DKK 7,086 (2025 level). SU-PhD grants are paid for a maximum of two years. When the Master’s degree has been obtained, candidates will be employed for two years as a PhD fellow according to the present collective agreement. Part B has a maximum duration of two years. Start date of this option is 1 September 2025.
