项目介绍

PhD Research Fellow in Topological Data Analysis

There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in Topological Data Analysis at the Department of Mathematics. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year with career-promoting work (e.g. teaching at the Department). The position is funded by the University of Bergen (UiB) as a contribution to the Lie-Størmer Center. The position is associated with the Center’s work package WP4 – Topology, Algebra, and Geometry for Complex Data Analysis.

The Lie-Størmer Center is jointly hosted by UiT The Arctic University of Norway (UiT) and the University of Bergen (UiB), Norway. The Center will employ PhD Research Fellows, whose research will focus on the interaction between algebra, differential geometry, analysis and computational mathematics, as well as their applications to data science and computational dynamics. Applicants can read more about the project at the Lie-Størmer Center’s homepage.

At the Lie-Størmer Center, we foster dialogue through collaborative research projects, our Mathesis international doctoral school, and a strong culture of scientific exchange and outreach.

About the project/work tasks

The PhD project is part of WP4 – Topology, Algebra, and Geometry for Complex Data Analysis at the Lie-Størmer Center. It will develop mathematical and computational methods in Topological Data Analysis, with particular emphasis on multiparameter persistence and applications to medical data. The project will combine theoretical work on multiparameter persistence with the design and implementation of algorithms for medical image analysis.

The successful candidate will investigate computational complexity, stability, and numerical summaries of multiparameter persistence, as well as applications to medical image analysis, and participate actively in the research environment of the Lie-Størmer Center and the Mathesis doctoral school.

Research at the Lie-Størmer Center aims to build bridges between pure and computational mathematics, among mathematics departments in Tromsø, Bergen, and across Norway, and between high-level research and education within the ERCOM network of European mathematical research centres.

Qualifications and personal qualities

  • Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent education in mathematics. Master’s students can apply provided they complete their final master’s examination before 31 December 2026. It is a condition of employment that the master’s degree has been awarded.
  • A background in algebraic topology and Topological Data Analysis is required.
  • Experience with scientific programming or algorithm development is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must have good written and oral English skills.

Personal and interpersonal qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Special requirements for the position

The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.

About the PhD Research Fellow position

About employment in the PhD position : The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with the possibility for a 4th year contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department and will be decided by the head of department upon appointment. If a 4th year is granted, one year of career-promoting work associated with teaching, dissemination or research infrastructure/services, will be distributed over the full employment period and thus corresponding to 25 per cent of the time each year.

The employment period may be reduced if the applicant has previously been employed in a qualifying post (e.g. research fellow, research assistant).

About the research training: As a PhD Research Fellow, the applicant must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. The deadline for applying for admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Science and Technology is 2 months after the applicant starts their position or after the start of the research project that will lead to the PhD degree. It is a condition that the applicant satisfies the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen.

We can offer

  • Exciting development opportunities as part of your role in a strong professional environment
