At the Department of Chemistry, there is a vacancy for PhD Research Fellow in Computational Chemistry. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year with career-promoting work (e.g., teaching duties at the department).

The research fellow will take part in the international and highly interactive working environment of the Computational Biology Unit (CBU), a multidisciplinary centre that UiB has established for research and education within the field of bioinformatics.

About the project/work tasks

The project will tightly combine atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with experimental methods sensitive to atomistic detail (in particular NMR relaxation). The PhD fellow will build a library of high-resolution experimental data of oligosaccharides, against which they will critically assess the current MD models and perform data-driven optimization. The verified models will be used to reveal the conformational ensemble and dynamics of oligosaccharides in the human glycome, in particular those relevant for virus–host interactions.

Qualifications and personal qualities

• Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent education in Chemistry, Physics, Bioinformatics, or a similar field. Master students can apply provided they complete their final master exam before 01.08.2025. It is a condition of employment that the master’s degree has been awarded.
• Experience with either molecular simulations or NMR experiments is required.
• Experience using MD simulations to study biomacromolecules is an advantage.
• Experience with experimental laboratory work, in particular NMR, for investigating biomacromolecular systems is an advantage.
• Experience with glycans is an advantage.
• Good knowledge of statistical physics is an advantage.
• Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
• Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Ambitions and potential for scientific career will be given substantial weight when evaluating the candidates.

Special requirements for the position
The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.

About the PhD position

About the PhD Research Fellow position
The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with a possible 4th year (contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department) to be decided by the Head of department upon appointment. If a 4th year is granted, one year of career-promoting duties associated with teaching, dissemination, or research infrastructure/services will be distributed over the full employment period, thus corresponding to 25 percent of the time each year.

The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a qualifying post (e.g.research fellow, research assistant).

About the research training
The PhD Research Fellow must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. The deadline for applying for admission to the PhD programme at The Faculty of Science and Technology is 2 months after the start of position or after the start of the research project that will lead to the PhD degree. It is a condition to satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen.
