About the position
Position as PhD Research Fellow in Cell Biology/Cellular Immunology available at the Section for Physiology and Cell Biology (FYSCELL), the Department of Biosciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo.
The fellowship period is 3 years.
Starting date no later than October 1st 2025.
A fourth year may be considered with a workload of 25 % that may consist of teaching, supervision duties, and/or research assistance. This is dependent upon the qualification of the applicant and the current needs of the department.

Project description and work tasks
The candidate for this position will study the peculiar immune system of Atlantic cod, which lacks the MHC II pathway required for T cell-dependent (TD) antibody responses, but at the same time presents an expanded set of MHC I genes and a unique Toll-like receptors (TLRs) profile. The project will have emphasis on the characterization of how the innate and adaptive immune system cooperate in Atlantic cod, and includes the characterization of teleost-specific TLRs, the study of the intracellular traffic of the MHC I molecules leading to antigen presentation and the identification of T cell-independent mechanisms of B-cell activation and differentiation.
This project will require methods within the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, and cell biology, including state-of-the-art microscopy techniques such as super-resolution and live cell imaging.
The student will work at the Section for Physiology and Cell Biology (FYSCELL), Department of Biosciences, UiO, under the joint supervision of Professor Finn-Eirik Johansen and Professor Cinzia Progida.
The Department of Biosciences hosts the Eurobioimaging Advanced imaging node NorMIC Oslo with access to a wide range of the latest imaging equipment and methods, an EM-lab, the Norwegian Sequencing Centre (NSC) and Proteomics services.Jarli og Jordan/UiO
