Job Description
We are seeking a full-time PhD student to join a nationwide network of patients, doctors, biologists and data scientists called “NextGen-ImmunoDermatology” (https://ng-id.nl/) to implement personalized treatments of skin ailments using novel biomarkers.

As part of the NG-ID Biomarkers Development team, you will be working on cross-institutional data fusion, imaging-based quantitative multi-omics, and developing new machine/deep learning tools for biomarker discovery.

Your principal responsibility will be to fulfil all the requirements to obtain a PhD degree at Maastricht University including, but not limited, to the following :

  • Writing several scientific publications which form the central corpus of your PhD thesis;
  • Supporting NG-ID cross-institution data preparation, data fusion and making data Findable-Accessible-Interoperable and Re-usable (FAIR);
  • Deploying artificial intelligence tools for quantitative analysis of imaging, including cytometric and mass spectrometry imaging;
  • Developing and evaluating multi-omics prediction models;
  • Working as an integral part of the wider NG-ID Biomarkers Development team to achieve the scientific objectives of the NG-ID network, as instructed by your PhD supervisor.

Since a PhD is primarily a research position, the candidate is not required to lecture or tutor, however such opportunities can be made available to the right candidate if so desired.

The successful candidate is expected to relocate to the city of Maastricht, the Netherlands, or to its immediate surrounding areas. The principal location of research will be : Clinical Data Science, Paul Henri Spaaklaan 1, 6229 EN, Maastricht, The Netherlands.

Requirements
We seek candidates with the following essential qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (or Dutch university equivalent) in data science, computer science, machine learning and deep learning, or else a very closely-related field to the aforementioned;
  • Expertise with data processing, image analysis and artificial intelligence;
  • Strong command of Python language including machine learning and deep learning skills;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Proven record of collaborating effectively as part of multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Strong interest in deploying AI into the healthcare research domain;
  • Scientific research level of English proficiency (e.g., Cambridge English Proficiency level C1) – Dutch fluency (or willingness to learn the Dutch language) would be highly regarded but not strictly mandatory.

What we offer
As PhD candidate in ‘Biomarker discovery for Next Generation Immuno-Dermatology’ at Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:

  • Good employment conditions. The position is graded in scale P according to UFO profile PhD, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €2901,00 and €3707,00 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
  • An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 1,0 FTE. Upon a positive evaluation, an extension of 3 years will follow. 
  • At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.
