At the Department of Design, there is a vacant position for a Research Fellow (100%) within Visual Communication. The position is for a fixed-term period of four years, with a desired start date of 01.09.2025.
About the project/work tasks:
The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly impacting society, and it is essential to explore various aspects of this technology. While AI offers many opportunities, there are challenges related to how the technology is utilized. AI can be used to promote or generate content that amplifies global disruptions, but it can also introduce new artistic methods and expressions.
Design – particularly visual communication – is especially influenced by AI. In the design field, practitioners should adopt a critical and exploratory approach to the far-reaching implications of artificial intelligence.
We are looking for skilled designers within visual communication who can conduct artistic research related to AI at a high level.
In artistic research at the Department of Design, emphasis is placed on practice that is reflective and process-driven. The candidate will be affiliated with one of the department’s research groups, working alongside colleagues from a broad range of design disciplines.
The Department has three research groups with different thematic focuses:
- Social Re-imagination
- Ecological Agency
- Technology and Materiality
The successful candidate will be associated with one of the department’s three research themes, alongside colleagues from a broad interdisciplinary design field.
We encourage applicants to familiarise themselves with the faculty members’ competences within Visual Communication at the department to consider the possibilities for supervision.

Project Description:
The project description should place the project in a subject/research field, and present the theme, problems and research questions, context, method, and plan for dissemination of results. The project description should present the project’s placement and relevance to the academic environment at the department, explaining any specific needs for academic and material resources, as well as addressing any legal and ethical considerations. Applicants must also indicate potential collaborating institutions and partners. We also request a separate progress plan for the various parts of the artistic research. Refer to Section 2.1 of the Program Description and our guide for writing a project description for more information about what the application should typically include.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
- Applicants must hold a bachelor’s and master’s degree in a relevant subject area, for a total of at least 5 years. The degree must be completed before the application deadline. Equivalent competence may exceptionally be assessed in accordance with the Norwegian Qualifications Framework, level 7.
- Applicants must have experience in artistic practice and production at a high level.
- Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others.
- Applicants must have good written and verbal English skills.
Personal and interpersonal qualities will be emphasized, with consideration given to ambitions and potential.
About the PhD position:
The following conditions apply to the position:
A PhD position shall lead to the completion of a doctoral degree and contribute to qualifying the candidate for relevant careers in higher education and research institutions, as well as in other sectors of the workforce where research expertise is required.
The total employment period is 4 years. At least three years will be dedicated to the doctoral research work. The remaining time will be allocated to other career-promoting activities aimed at qualifying the candidate for relevant careers requiring research expertise.
About the research training:
As a PhD candidate, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. It is a condition that you satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen. A final plan for the implementation of the research training must be approved by the faculty within three months after you have started work in the position.
The candidate is required to complete the mandatory joint training component in the National Research School in Artistic Research.
There is a residency requirement for PhD candidates employed at the faculty.

- Documentation of formal qualifications. This includes diplomas and transcripts of grades for completed bachelor’s degree and master’s degree s, as well as certified translations if the language is other than Nordic or English.

- A brief statement outlining the applicant’s research interests and motivation for applying for the position.

- Names and contact information for two references. One of these should be the main supervisor of the master’s thesis.
