Job description

The project will contribute to investigating how lack of representation contributes to the marginalization of children in vulnerable groups, by integrating interdisciplinary insights from educational philosophy, cultural psychology and humanities studies in special education and health.

Through analytical-hermeneutic methods, the project will explore frameworks of understanding and strategies for recognizing and reinforcing children’s voices as legitimate social actors. The project focuses in particular on the systemic inequalities that surround children in vulnerable groups, including children with special needs.

The PhD position is connected to the development of the ongoing research project «Democracy, children and representation» (Demorep). A short summary: The research project examines how misrepresentation contributes to the marginalization and silencing of children, while also exploring strategies to recognize and amplify their voices as legitimate social actors. Through analytical- hermeneutical methods the project aims at advancing the field of children’s representation by providing interdisciplinary research and innovative approaches to key issues of inclusion, diversity, and participatory rights.

The candidate is affiliated with the research group Humanities Studies in Education (HumStud) at Department of Education, UiO, as well as an international network, and will be given the opportunity to work with researchers across the world. For more information:

More about the position

The fellowship period is four years, with three years devoted to research education. 25% of the workload is set aside for other career-promoting work, that consists of teaching and supervision duties and research assistance.

The research fellow must take part in the faculty’s approved PhD program and is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

Qualification requirements

Applicants must satisfy the requirements for admission to the Faculty´s PhD programme. This includes:

  • Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent within relevant and accepted subject areas.
  •  A Master’s degree (120 ECTS) with a minimum grade B (ECTS grading scale) or equivalent. The Master’s degree must include a thesis of at least 30 ECTS, with a minimum grade B.
  • A bachelor’s degree with a minimum grade C (ECTS grading scale)
  • For 5-year studies, the average grade must be C or better for the first three years, and B or better for the last two years (ECTS grading scale). The Master thesis must have been graded with a minimum grade B.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English and Norwegian ,(or another  Scandinavian language)

In the assessment of applications, emphasis will be placed on:

  • The quality of the project description, the description of the research topic’s relevance to educational issues, the specific problems to be studied, the choice of scientific theory and method, and the proposed implementation plan for the study
  • The applicant’s experience, personal suitability and motivation for the post, including her/his ability to collaborate and to form part of a cross-disciplinary academic community
  • The applicant’s academic attitude and motivation with regard to completing the research training program

  • Salary in position as PhD Research Fellow, position code 1017 in salary range NOK from NOK 537 000, – to NOK 575 400. From the salary, 2 percent is deducted in statutory contributions to the State Pension Fund.
