PhD position on Interactive Robot Learning

项目介绍

Your function

The position is embedded in the 10 year Hybrid Intelligence (HI) project, a collaboration between six universities in the Netherlands.

The Hybrid Intelligence centre (HI) aims at creating methods and systems that combine human and machine intelligence, expanding human intellect instead of replacing it. HI systems place humans and their values at the centre, changing the course of the ongoing AI revolution.

This project aims to endow learning robots with the ability to learn more efficiently with the help of human interaction at multiple levels of abstraction (e.g., task vs. motion level) as well as different types of teaching signals (demonstrations, corrections, evaluation, etc.). The candidate will collaborate closely with the robot-assisted surgery team of the HI consortium, including the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam.

Your duties

The candidate will investigate novel interactive robot learning techniques for learning from flexible human feedback. The research will involve the following three aspects:

a) developing novel interactive learning algorithms based on state-of-the-art reinforcement learning techniques, targeting interactive robots and with a focus on assistive perception and collaborative manipulation, partially in the context of robot-assisted surgery.

b) conducting controlled user studies in simulation and in situ to test the developed algorithms in real interactions with humans. Most of the experimental work will be conducted on the Franka Emika robot.

c) extensively collaborating with the supervisory team and the relevant members of the consortium at large.

d) disseminating research outcomes through conference and journal publications, as well as workshops at relevant venues such as HRICoRLIROSICRAICMLAAMAS, …

Your profile

  • Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Computer Science, or related fields
  • Strong knowledge in machine learning (ideally, prior experience with reinforcement learning)
  • Excellent programming and algorithm development skills
  • Prior experience working with robotic platforms, at least in simulation
  • Willingness to step outside of their own discipline to solve complex problems that cut across bodies of knowledge in different fields
  • Experience conducting user studies and analyzing human data (preferred)
  • A good team spirit and willingness to collaborate across institutions and be actively involved in the larger research consortium

The candidate will be supervised jointly by Dr. Kim Baraka (Social AI group, VU Amsterdam), Dr. Herke van Hoof (Amsterdam Machine Learning Lab, University of Amsterdam). The position is embedded in the Hybrid Intelligence centre (https://www.hybrid-intelligence-centre.nl/), hence adaptivity to work in a heterogeneous team and consortium, creativity and interest in multi-disciplinary research are fundamental. The candidate will be mainly based at VU Amsterdam, but will be expected to actively collaborate with the Amsterdam Machine Learning Lab at University of Amsterdam, and the HI consortium at large.

As a university, we strive for equal opportunities for all, recognising that diversity takes many forms. We believe that diversity in all its complexity is invaluable for the quality of our teaching, research and service. We are always looking for talent with diverse backgrounds and experiences. This also means that we are committed to creating an inclusive community so that we can use diversity as an asset.

We realise that each individual brings a unique set of skills, expertise and mindset. Therefore we are happy to invite anyone who recognises themselves in the profile to apply, even if you do not meet all the requirements.

What do we offer?

A challenging position in a socially engaged organisation. At VU Amsterdam, you contribute to education, research and service for a better world. And that is valuable. So in return for your efforts, we offer you:

  • a salary of minimum € 2.901,00 (PhD) and maximum € 3.707,00 (PhD) gross per month, on a full-time basis. This is based on UFO profile PhD candidate. The exact salary depends on your education and experience.
  • a position for 1 FTE. Your employment contract will initially last 18 months. After a satisfactory evaluation of the initial appointment, the contract will be extended for a total duration of 4 years.

We also offer you attractive fringe benefits and regulations. Some examples:

  • A full-time 38-hour working week comes with a holiday leave entitlement of 232 hours per year. If you choose to work 40 hours, you have 96 extra holiday leave hours on an annual basis. For part-timers, this is calculated pro rata.
  • 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus
  • solid pension scheme (ABP)
  • contribution to commuting expenses
  • optional model for designing a personalized benefits package
