PhD position in veterinary epidemiology of free-roaming dog movements and diseases

项目介绍

A fully funded PhD position is available at the Veterinary Public Health institute on the population structure, movement behaviour, and connectivity of free-roaming dogs and their viruses. This position is part of a large interdisciplinary project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) with several PhD positions aiming to determine the role of free-roaming dogs in the spread and persistence of infectious disease.
The project will combine experts from veterinary and social sciences, epidemiology, mathematical modelling and population genetics to test which influence the landscape, infrastructure and human-dog relationships have on disease transmission. The overarching goal of the project is to formulate effective and socially accepted control strategies to reduce infection and disease burden in dogs and humans in Africa and Asia.Tasks

  • Collect data on free-roaming dog movements in Uganda and India, and potentially in Chad and Indonesia through GPS units and observations
  • Collect data on dog diseases through serology and coprology
  • Work with local and international collaborators in diverse, challenging field conditions
  • Perform statistical analyses, including spatial analysis, to derive insights from the collected data
  • Prepare presentations and manuscripts for leading scientific journals

RequirementsWe are looking for a skilled, reliable and highly-motivated PhD candidate who is able to work independently and in a diverse team of different origins and educational backgrounds.

  • Master’s degree in veterinary medicine, epidemiology, biology, or a related field
  • Solid background in veterinary medicine or epidemiology
  • Experience with fieldwork in physically and mentally challenging conditions is a plus
  • Experience with data analysis and biostatistics and fieldwork is advantageous
  • Language Requirements: English is the working language. Knowledge of German or French is helpful for living in Switzerland, but not essential for the project

We offer

  • Fully funded PhD-position up to four years (salary according to SNSF guidelines)
  • Anticipated start date: June 2025
  • An active scientific environment within a veterinary epidemiological research institute of approximately 15 members. The research focus of the Veterinary Public Health Institute (VPHI) includes applied research on the modelling of infectious diseases, surveillance and control of animal health and zoonoses, animal health economics, and One Health. The institute fosters an open team culture with extensive interactions between research projects.
