The Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Science, is offering a full-time PhD-position for a duration of three (3) years.
The position is partly affiliated with the project ‘A Cryptosporidiosis Point-of-Care Test-and-Treat Strategy in Children with Diarrhea,’ which is funded by the University of Bergen.
About the project/work tasks:
- This PhD position will examine genetic variation in collected Cryptosporidium isolates as well as inflammation and antibody responses against Cryptosporidum infection.
- The PhD position’s work can include the recruitment of patients, sampling, isolation of Cryptosporidium from stool samples, oocyst purification techniques, DNA extraction, end-point and qPCR, sequence analyses, targeted sequencing, serological assays, antibody analyses, bioinformatics and statistical analyses, compiling results, and writing scientific publications.
- The PhD position will also utilize samples from a project that investigates the effect implementing diagnostics and treatment against Cryptosporidium infection in children with diarrhea in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- The workplace will primarily be at the Laboratory Building, Department of Clinical Science, Jonas Lies vei 87 in Bergen.
- There will be international collaboration and potential study visits to partners in the USA or other countries.
- It is expected that the PhD candidate contributes to a social and interdisciplinary research environment and should know, or be willing to learn, the Norwegian language.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
- The applicant must possess a Master`s degree or an equivalent in molecular biology, genetics, global health or completed veterinary/medical studies.
- Laboratory experience with relevant methods is a significant advantage.
- Previous research and publication experience will be viewed positively.
- Experience from thematically relevant research projects on intestinal parasites or in low-income countries will be viewed positively.
- The hired candidate must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have good collaboration skills.
- Ability and motivation to carry out a PhD project.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English, see documentation requirements.

About the PhD position:
Organized research training (PhD program):
The selected candidate will be required to enrol in the University of Bergen’s approved PhD programme, aiming to complete the degree within three years. Admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the Faculty is essential for this position.
Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan, must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.
The PhD-position:
PhD-positions are fixed-term appointments. Candidates cannot be employed in a PhD position for more than one fixed-term period at the same institution, nor have held a similar position at any institution within the region.
