About the position

We are seeking a PhD candidate for an international research project on social inequality in upbringing and childhood, with a particular focus on the organization of childhood, school, and associated welfare systems.

At NTNU, Department of Sociology and Political Science (ISS), there is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in Sociology or Political Science for a period of 3 years. The position is primarily associated with the research group Social Inequality at ISS and the Gemini Center for research on inclusion in school and upbringing- Oppink https://www.geminioppink.no/en/ in collaboration with the ISS research group, Organization and Society https://www.ntnu.edu/web/iss/organization-and-society

The position can include work duties and be extended by up to one year. The position as a research fellow aims to complete a doctoral education leading to a PhD.

Your immediate leader will be the head of the department.

About the project

The position is part of the project “Comparing the organization of durable inequalities in childhood: Inequality in childhoods, schools and associated welfare systems (CODIC)” https://www.ntnu.edu/iss/codic. The position is funded by the Research Council of Norway (NFR).

CODIC’s overarching goal is to study how actors in and associated with the school, welfare, and upbringing fields work and relate to social inequality and social inclusion of children and youth, as well as to study how gender, class, ethnicity, and disability structure problem understanding, opportunity structures, and social practices. The consequences of social segregation are studied through case studies of schools in high- and low-status areas, organizational studies, and in the handling of social inclusion. The project is open to PhD candidates and postdocs from various disciplines.

The PhD research fellow in sociology or political science will be linked to one of three areas: 1. Analysis of similarities and differences in how the Nordic and North American cases are organizationally designed, and the emphasis on social inequality in legislation, policy programs, and practice. 2. Analysis of actors’ understanding and response to persistent social inequality in the childhood population. 3. Analysis of social inequalities in the childhood population, including trends and major shifts in the three Nordic cases and in the US case. Work tasks

  • The candidates will participate in the CODIC project and work together with the other participants with the aim of strengthening research on inclusion in school and upbringing.
  • The candidates will participate in planned exchanges between the institutes in the CODIC project to ensure collaboration with the other participants/partners in Norway and internationally.
  • The position may include work duties and if agreed upon will then be extended by up to one year. In this case, it is expected that the candidate(s) will contribute to teaching within the department’s study programs and the field of sociology or political science or fields with keywords such as social inequality, welfare and social policy, organization, and childhood as part of these work duties.

Required selection criteria

  • You must have an academically relevant background in social sciences, preferably in sociology, political science, or another relevant field.
  • Your educational path must correspond to a five-year Norwegian study program, with 120 ECTS credits achieved at the master’s level.
  • The applicant should have a strong academic background from their previous studies, with an average grade for the last two years of the master’s degree or equivalent education (equivalent to 120 ECTS credits) of B or better according to NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants without letter grades from previous studies must have an equally strong academic foundation. Applicants with a weaker grade background may be considered if it is documented that the candidate is particularly suitable for a PhD education. Candidates who are in the final phase of their master’s degree can apply and will be considered but cannot be employed until they have completed the master’s degree.
  • Good written and oral skills in English.
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty’s doctoral program 
  • Good quality of the project outline (max. 1,500 words), in relation to the information given under the subheading ‘About the Project’ 

As a result of the new University of Applied Sciences Act with associated regulations of 01.08.2024, NTNU has, during a transitional period (for decisions on employment in recruitment positions before 1 August 2025), chosen to use the terms of employment in the old regulations of 31 January 2006 no. 102 on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, research fellow, scientific assistant and specialist candidate. The appointment is also to be made in accordance with the Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant 

Preferred selection criteria

  • Research-relevant experience of 1-2 years, such as publishing and participation in research projects, is an advantage.
  • Solid skills in quantitative and qualitative methods.
  • Written and oral skills in Norwegian, Swedish or Finnish.

Completing a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) can be demanding. Therefore, you should be able to:

  • be structured and set goals and make plans to reach them
  • present and discuss your research, and constructively engage with feedback from colleagues
  • work constructively under pressure or in the face of adversity
  • show curiosity and a strong motivation for the subject
  • analyze data, assess different perspectives and draw well-founded conclusions

When assessing the best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, grades from master’s degree, experience and personal suitability, as well as motivation for the position.

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The employment period is 3 years. The position can additionally include work duties and be extended by one year, subject to agreement. 

Employment in the research fellow position requires admission to the PhD program in social sciences, specializing in political science/sociology. As a research fellow, you are obliged to participate in an organized doctoral study program during the employment period, and employment is conditional on you being qualified for admission to the PhD program within three months. 

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding.

For the necessary academic and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.

About the application

We will take joint work into account. If it is difficult to identify your efforts in the joint work, you must enclose a short description of your participation.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates.
