Eight (8) open PhD Fellowships
At the Faculty of Medicine, four (4) open PhD positions are available along with four (4) positions for students at the Medical Student Research Programme starting 1 February 2027.
The successful candidates will be appointed full-time for a period of three (3) years or a maximum of four (4) months after completion of the PhD degree, should this be achieved by less than four years.
These positions are open to applicants holding a master’s degree relevant to the faculty’s research areas.
Affiliation
The positions will be affiliated with one of the four departments listed below.
This announcement applies exclusively to positions linked to research projects at:
- The Department of Biomedicine (IBM)
- The Department of Clinical Science (K2)
- The Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care (IGS)
- The Department of Clinical Medicine (K1).
For projects affiliated with The Department of Clinical Dentistry, a separate call will be announced.
Four (4) positions are open PhD positions
The positions are available for applicants with a master`s degree relevant for the research at the faculty.
Four (4) PhD positions are designated for applicants that have participated in The Medical Student Research Program:
These positions are exclusively for participants who have completed the Medical Student Research Program. It is a requirement that you start in the position directly after the completion of your degree.
Candidates who graduate during autumn 2026 start on 1 February 2027. Candidates who graduate during spring 2027 start on 1 September 2027.
The successful candidates will be employed in a full-time (100%) position for a period of three (3) years, with the time required to complete the training component of the organized research training (PhD program) deducted, or until a maximum of four (4) months after the application period or upon completion of the PhD degree. The successful candidates will be required to work with the Medical Student Training Program for up to 20 hours per year. This work, which involves recruitment, public relations, and similar tasks, will be agreed upon with the Head of the Medical Student Research Program
Evaluation of applicants:
Applicants are evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Applicant: The applicant’s competence, grades and relevant professional activity. Applicants must have obtained a master`s degree (see further information below).
- Project: The scientific value of the project and its feasibility within the framework of the PhD program and fellowship period.
- Research environment: The research environment’s capacity to support the candidate’s development, including relevant publication activity
- International experience: Planned research stays of 6–12 months at international institutions will be evaluated positively. The application should describe how the stay abroad is integrated into the research project and how it will contribute to its scientific quality.

Qualifications and personal qualities:
- The positions are open to applicants who hold a relevant professional qualification or a masters’ degree relevant to the faculty’s research areas.
- Applicants must also meet the English language proficiency requirements, please also see the requirements for English language qualifications
The applicant’s personal suitability for the position is a significant factor in the evaluation.
Organized research training (PhD programme):
The purpose of the position is the completion of a PhD degree. The selected candidate must be enrolled in and complete the requirement of the PhD programme within the timeframe. The admission to the PhD programme, including approval of the final training plan and a project plan outline, must be granted by the faculty no later than three months after the commencement of the position.
The PhD position:
PhD fellowships are fixed-term positions. Candidates cannot be employed in more than one fixed‑term PhD position at the same institution, nor can they have previously held a similar employment at another institution in the region.
The language of instruction in the PhD programme is English.
Special Requirements for the Position
The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulations governing the Norwegian export control system. These regulations will be applied in the assessment and processing of the applications.

For applicants with at least one year of employment in a position as a General Practitioner or Dentist, salary NOK 615 000 (For applicants who are licensed as medical doctors or dentists, documentation of Norwegian authorization must be submitted with the application.). Medical specialist starts on salary NOK 635 000 (For applicants with specialist training, a certificate of specialist approval from the Norwegian Directorate of Health must also be included.)

- Salary NOK 605 000 for applicants who are medical specialists. Applicants with specialist training must include a certificate of specialist approval issued by the Norwegian Directorate of Health.

- Application letter which includes the name of the project, name of supervisor(s) both main and co-supervisor, research group and the department where the project will be performed (As a general rule, admission to the PhD programme requires one main supervisor and one co‑supervisor)The application letter should mention your motivation for a PhD-education with this project. The application should contain a justification for the applicant’s motivation for completing a PhD related to the specific project.
- Project description (max 6 pages), including a summary and references, using this template. Please include area of research, research problems/questions, methods and selection of theoretical approach.

- Witnessed (certified) copies of diplomas and transcripts of all academic degrees (original) with certified translation and transcript of grades to English or a Scandinavian language. Recognition of foreign higher education from Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK – dir) concerning whether the education (bachelor and master) corresponds in scope and level to a Norwegian Master’s degree. If no review has been received by the application deadline, please enclose a confirmation from HK – dir that they have received your application. - The CV must include a description of the main supervisor’s experience with supervision at both master’s and PhD level.
- It must also contain a list of all current PhD and postdoctoral candidates for whom the main supervisor is the primary supervisor or mentor, and who are funded by the Faculty of Medicine.
- For each candidate, please state: name, start date, and expected end date.
- If the main supervisor is not currently supervising or mentoring any candidates funded by the Faculty of Medicine, this must be clearly stated.
- A supervisor or mentor may not supervise more than four (4) PhD and/or postdoctoral candidates funded by the Faculty at the same time. Please refer to the guidelines here

11. Invitation letter from a foreign institution (required if the project includes a research stay abroad). The letter must clearly describe the planned content and purpose of the stay.

Also note that the course for PhD supervisors and Treatment of personal data in medical and health researchare mandatory for all supervisors and mentors. These courses must be completed before the candidate can be admitted to the program.
Supervision Requirements:
The main supervisor must hold a permanent position of at least 50 % (FTE) at the Faculty of Medicine.
Exceptions may be granted for individuals who hold a part‑time appointment at the Faculty, and a full‑time post at Helse Vest, NORCE, or within the primary health services in Western Norway.
The main supervisor must be employed at the faculty throughout the entire PhD period. Deviations from this rule can be accepted if the application contains a clear plan for replacement with a new supervisor employed by the Faculty of Medicine. One cannot be main supervisor if retiring (including emeritus status) within the scheduled duration of the PhD position.
