PhD Fellowship in Adolescent Health with Focus on Body and Well-being

Job description

We are excited to announce a PhD position within a new research project examining how weight-related understandings and practices shape children’s body images and well-being. The main responsibility of the successful candidate is conducting go-along ethnography with children following them across school, home and leisure settings. Also, the candidate is to collaborate closely with a postdoc, so that insights are shared across the two sub-studies within the research project. Further the candidate is to involve not only children but also their parents, teachers, coaches etc. in a sensitive and reflective way, along with communicating findings to scientific and public audiences.

The successful candidate should hold:

  • a Master’s degree in anthropology, psychology, sociology, sport science, public health or equivalent
  • skills in qualitative research methods, preferably experience with ethnographic fieldwork
  • sufficient proficiency in the Danish language to conduct fieldwork among children
  • proficiency in oral and written English to be capable of presenting results to an international audience
  • ability to work collaboratively with both junior and senior researchers, children, parents, professionals and volunteers

Workplace
The successful candidate will become part of the research group‘Sports& Social Issues’, which comprises senior researchers and several PhD students and research assistants. We are a team-oriented group of researchers from a variety of backgrounds(e.g., sport sciences, anthropology, sociology, pedagogy and psychology). Furthermore, there will be a close collaboration with medical doctors and nurses, who in their research and clinical practices deal with weight-related issues in the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Aalborg University Hospital.

Your main supervisor will beSine Agergaard,who is trained in ethnography, and employed as professor and head of the research group‘Sport& Social Issues’. The fieldwork will take place in the North Denmark region, with presence at the workplace in Aalborg to be negotiated.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master’s degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School in Medicine, Biomedical Science and Technology in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
