PhD Candidate in sustainable and circular management of plastics from Norwegian Aquaculture Sector

项目介绍

About the job

There is a PhD Candidate position available at the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management – section of Occupational health, safety and environment (HSE). The position is resident at NTNUs main campus in Trondheim. It is an educational position, which will provide promising research talents the opportunity for professional development towards a PhD-degree. The position is connected to the PhD program at the Faculty of Economics and Management and the faculty will be your employer.

The position is part of two research projects: “Combining Skills to Identify the ‘Sweet Spot’ to Solve Marine Plastic Pollution in Norway” and “Exploring Feasibility of HDPE as Sustainable and Circular Material for Aquaculture Nets in Norway.” The “Sweet Spot” project is an established, interdisciplinary initiative within NTNU’s sustainability efforts. The second project is an industry-academic collaboration funded by the Norwegian Retailers Fund, aimed at sustainable management of plastic resources in the region.

The main objective of these projects is to advance the outstanding research building on the interdisciplinary activities at different departments at NTNU to investigate transformative solutions to the marine plastic problem through circular economy. The terminology “sweet spot” reflects the idea of using mutually complementing knowledge systems to build a holistic picture of marine plastic pollution in Norway and use this as a stepping stone for co-developing interventions that are eco-effective.

The PhD position linked to these projects aims to assess sustainable and circular pathways for managing plastics in the Norwegian aquaculture sector. The candidate will:

  1. Assess the product life cycle processes of commonly used aquaculture components.
  2. Using life cycle management tools, characterize and quantify typical plastic polymers from the Norwegian aquaculture sector to identify and manage the most polluting components and their associated risks of microplastic and other pollutant releases.

These objectives will help uncover gaps in the sustainable and circular management of plastics in sea-based aquaculture along the Norwegian coast. The findings will pave the way for developing sustainable handling and management practices for aquaculture products throughout their life cycles.
