About the position
The role of CFD has a large potential in marine engineering. Still, it has relatively modest use. One bottleneck is the large computational times. Our hybrid CFD method which we refer to as Potential Viscous Code (PVC3D), based on OpenFOAM, combines potential flow theory with a Navier—Stokes solver. For a range of marine problems involving a free surface, PVC3D is two or even three orders of magnitude faster than “conventional” CFD. At present the free-surface conditions are linearized. Within our research center SFI Blues we are presently incorporating wave-current interaction.
We would now also like to include higher-order free-surface conditions. The main application is to enable computation of slowly varying wave loads, while also incorporating the effects of flow separation. Slowly varying wave loads can be design-driving for mooring systems of various floating structures, including floating wind turbines, closed aquaculture cages, solar islands and oil-and-gas production and exploration rigs.
We are in this respect looking for a PhD candidate who has interest in exploring this topic beyond the state-of-the-art. The relevant candidate must thus be interested and capable in physical modelling of marine hydrodynamic problems. The relevant candidate also has interest in learning advanced C++ programming, since a successful study will rely on being able to use the OpenFOAM library in an advanced manner. If you have a master’s degree within applied/numerical mathematics or applied physics you are most welcome to apply, if you have an interest in learning marine hydrodynamics.

About the project
The PhD project is a part of the SFI BLUES center for research-based innovation.
Duties of the position
- Complete the doctoral education until obtaining a doctorate
- Carry out research of good quality within the framework described above
- Academic publications and popular science dissemination
- Participate in the SFI BLUES research activities
- Participate in international activities such as conferences and/or research stays at foreign educational institutions

Required selection criteria
- You must have an academically relevant background within marine technology, applied mathematics, applied physics or equivalent.
- You must have a master’s degree in marine technology, applied mathematics, applied physics, or equivalent. Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master’s level. Master’s students can apply, but the master’s degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position.
- You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master’s degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be considered if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
- You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty’s Doctoral Programme in Engineering.
- Programming skills in MATLAB, C, Python, or similar
- Strong theoretical background in mathematics and physics
- Excellent written and oral English language skills

If you cannot document skills in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish at level A2 upon employment, you must complete Norwegian courses corresponding to at least 15 credits before the end of the employment period. NTNU will facilitate this.

Salary and conditions
In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 536 200 per annum depending on qualifications and seniority. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.
The employment period is 3 years. If learning Norwegian (level A2 corresponding to at least 15 credits) is to be completed before the end of the employment period, the employment period can be extended by 10 weeks.
For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD programme in Engineering within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral programme throughout the period of employment.
The position is conditional on external funding.

For the necessary academic and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.
About the application
