The HKU Medical Faculty offers several research postgraduate programmes in which students are able to train alongside Faculty members, work in state-of-the-art laboratories, and participate in international exchange programmes.

The Medical Faculty shares with other Faculties in the University the common goal of imparting knowledge to students through research.  Every department in the Faculty actively participates in the training of research postgraduate students studying for the Master of Philosophy (MPhil), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Surgery (MS) degrees.

Academic staff members in the Faculty undertake a wide spectrum of research, from frontier basic medical sciences research to cutting-edge clinical research.  They also supervise a large number of research postgraduate students from both local and overseas institutions. Clinical departments enjoy the flexibility of conducting and supervising research in both laboratories and clinical settings. 

With a strong research base, the Faculty has made tremendous contributions to the study and treatment of various diseases. The high quality work that our researchers publish has resulted in 53 of them being listed among the top 1% of scientists in their fields (ISI Essential Science Indicators).

As the longest established institution in higher education and the top university of Hong Kong (THE 2019, QS 2019 & ARWU 2018), our students work within the Faculty’s state-of-the-art research facilities and amongst a network of over 500 full-time teaching staff, 600 research staff and 660 research postgraduate students.
