Overview

The division of medicine comprises of six research departments and institutes whose research aims to understand the basis of disease, and to develop better diagnostics and treatment for diseases. Each research department and institute comprises a number of specialist centres, each with a particular research focus.

Additional costs

Your research degree may be subject to an Additional Fee Element (AFE). The AFE (also known as bench fees) is an additional cost, incurred by yourself or your sponsor. It is levied to cover the costs related to consumables, equipment and materials etc. which are not included in the tuition fee. As each research project is unique in nature, the AFE is calculated on a student by student basis and is determined by your academic supervisor.

Funding

Research council studentships and fellowships are occasionally available for MPhil/PhD students. Opportunities may also exist for studentships funded by the Division of Medicine and the Faculty of Medical Sciences.

The application route is usually via dedicated, funded programmes for four-year MPhil/PhD studentships.
