项目介绍

The focus of this doctoral program is the nonlinear mechanics (kinematics, dynamics, energetics) of transformations of solids, geo- and bio- materials as well as fluid flows (geometric non-linearities).

The ambition of the program is to cover the theoretical formulation (functional, variational and differential), the numerical simulation (space, time and matter discretisations) and the experimental identification (heterogenous/anisotropic material testing, optical diagnostic techniques, signal processing) of relevant mechanics problems. On the theoretical side, contemporary multiscale models (hierarchical, reduced, …) and correlated micro-macro scale bridging methods (homogeneisation, …) are emphasized in several courses and proposed as thesis subjects.

The objective of the program is to form highly knowledgeable and innovative research scientists in the modern aspects of continuum mechanics.

EPFL Civil & Structural Engineering is ranked 11th and the Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering is ranked 18th in the world according to the QS World University Rankings.
