Duties   

Doctoral position in Psychology    

We are looking for a PhD student for the research program Multidisciplinary Program on Oral Testimony (MPORT): Challenges and Innovations for Obtaining Evidence from Human Sources. MPORT is a large research program, supported by the Swedish Research Council, that studies different aspects of oral evidence in criminal cases. As a PhD student, you will be part of the Criminal, Legal, and Investigative Psychology (CLIP) research group. The research you will conduct, within the framework of the research program, will focus on various issues related to cross-cultural interviews and interrogations. https://www.gu.se/en/doctoral-studies. The research itself will consist of planning, conducting and analyzing the outcome of both qualitative and quantitative studies. You will also write scientific articles on the collected material and take courses within the framework of the doctoral program. The work requires good ability to plan, analyze, work independently, as well as collaborate in groups. Another important part of the work is to communicate with international researchers as well as with various legal actors with expertise in oral evidence. Very good knowledge of English (both spoken and written) is required. Doctoral education normally includes four years of full-time study, comprising of work with a thesis project (165 higher education credits) and courses (75 higher education credits). Some courses are obligatory, while others are elective. The primary task for the PhD student is to complete the thesis work under supervision. A PhD student is expected to develop his/her own ideas and communicate scientific results both orally and in writing. This is done in part through the completion of a scientific thesis. The position may furthermore include lecturing and other departmental duties, resulting in extension of the employment period for a corresponding length of time.  

Doctoral studies comprises four years of full-time study, and leads to a doctoral degree.    

As part of your employment as a doctoral student, you may have departmental duties corresponding to up to 20 % of full-time employment, distributed throughout your study period, and result in a corresponding extension of the studies. Departmental duties usually consist of teaching at first- and second-cycle levels, but may also include research and administration.    

Eligibility   

Basic and specific eligibility are prerequisites for entry to doctoral education.
To meet basic eligibility requirements, the applicant must have:
-completed a second-cycle degree
-completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are in second-cycle courses
-or have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, either in Sweden or abroad

To meet specific eligibility requirements, the applicant must have:
-completed at least 90 higher education credits of first-cycle courses in psychology, in addition to
-at least 60 higher education credits of second-cycle courses, of which at least 15 higher education credits are in scientific methods, as
well as a thesis of at least 15 higher education credits, or
-knowledge equivalent to that listed above, acquired in another manner

Assessment criteria   

Selection among applicants who meet the basic and specific entry requirements is based on the ability to complete the postgraduate programme. Great emphasis is placed on the applicant’s previous thesis/degree projects and any previous research-related tasks, personal suitability, and other relevant qualifications. Applicants should have an interest in legal psychology research. Training or experience in legal psychology research or similar is an advantage. Applicants should be highly goal-oriented, have good cooperation skills, and have good planning skills, and be ready to take initiative. Experience of working in research projects, coding and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, and scientific writing is an advantage.

Admission and employment   

Once you have been admitted to doctoral studies, you will be employed as a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg.   

The provisions for employment as a doctoral student can be found in ordinance SFS 1993:100.    Initial employment as a doctoral student may apply for a maximum of one year, and may be renewed by a maximum of two years at a time.  A doctoral student may be employed as a doctoral student for a maximum of eight years, but the total period of employment may not be longer than the equivalent of full-time education at doctoral level for four years.     

The University applies a local agreement on salaries for doctoral students.

Please note, doctoral studies at The department of Psychology require physical presence to conduct the studies. If the admitted applicant needs a residence permit for higher education to pursue studies in Sweden, The department of Psychology has the right to revoke the admission decision if the applicant cannot present a valid residence permit no later than at the start of the studies.
