We are looking for two Doctoral Researchers (PhD students) to work on deep learning methodologies for machine and robot perception. These positions are funded by the Horizon Europe project OPERA (Open Perception, Learning, and Decision-Making Toolbox for General Purpose Robot AI), and the selected applicants will be members of the Computational Intelligence group led by Professor Alexandros Iosifidis, and closely collaborate with the Signal Analysis and Machine Intelligence group led by Professor Moncef Gabbouj on achieving the goals and objectives of the Tampere University team within the project.
The positions are full-time starting from October 1st, 2026, until the end of the project September 30th, 2030. In case a selected applicant starts later than the start of the project, the duration of the position will be adjusted to end at the end of the project. The workplace is located at Hervanta Campus of Tampere University in Finland, and the positions are situated in the Computing Sciences Unit of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The doctoral researchers at Tampere University will propose and develop novel deep learning methodologies, disseminate their results in high-quality publications in international conferences and journals, interact with project partners in project activities, integrate their methodologies and related baselines to the toolbox of the project. The research topics for the selected applicants are the following:
Doctoral Researcher 1 will work on the following topics:
- Self-supervised and complementary learning strategies
- Social signal analysis and collaborative learning
- Learning for increased robustness to variations and adaptation
Doctoral Researcher 2 will work on the following topics:
- Learning for adaptive and robust human-robot and robot-environment interaction
- Multimodal human-centric understanding and adaptation
- Active sensor fusion for increased robustness and adaptivity
In addition, the duties of the doctoral researchers may include some teaching tasks (5-10%) in topics connected to their expertise.

REQUIREMENTS
- A completed master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or another related field
- Strong knowledge of Machine Learning theory and methods, and related Deep Learning approaches
- Excellent knowledge of programming in Python and scientific libraries used for Deep Learning (PyTorch or TensorFlow) and ability to work using multiple Deep Learning libraries
- Ability to conduct systematic scientific research related to the design of Deep Learning methods and models
- A curious mind and solid skills in critical thinking and problem solving
- Very good communication skills in English and ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams
- Ability to write research papers in high-quality peer-reviewed journals or conferences in the field of Machine Learning and/or Finance
The selected applicants will need to apply for and be granted a study right for a doctoral degree in the doctoral programme of Computing and Electrical Engineering at Tampere University. WE OFFER
The full-time positions will be filled for a fixed-term period starting from October 1st, 2026, until the end of the project September 30th, 2030. In case a selected applicant starts later than the start of the project, the duration of the position will be adjusted to end at the end of the project.
The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Doctoral Researcher is placed on level 2-4 of the job requirements scale. A typical starting salary for a Doctoral Researcher is approximately 2700 EUR/month. The salary increases based on experience and the progress of doctoral studies.
