Job description

A Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1017) in Classics is available at the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas, University of Oslo.

Applicants are expected to submit a proposal for a research project within Classics that can be completed within 3 years. The proposed project should be thematically relevant to ongoing research in the Classics division. Applications combining areas of specialization present in the department are particularly welcome.

UiO’s Classics division actively participates in a wide array of research areas encompassing Greek, Latin, and Neo-Latin philology, as well as classical reception studies. Its breadth of expertise is reflected in diverse research groups (“Linguistics and Poetics”, “Novel and Epic, Ancient and Modern”, and “Norway’s Antiquity”) as well as ongoing research projects, including “Greek Culture in European Heritage and Identity”, “New Signs of Antiquity”, “Transmission of Magical Knowledge in Antiquity”, and Editing papyri from the collection of the University of Oslo Library. UiO’s Classicists have been involved in curating various digital editions and databases, including DĀMOS – Database of Mycenaean at OsloFLT – Fascist Latin TextsOPES – Oslo Papyri Electronic System, and PROIEL – Pragmatic Resources in Old IndoEuropean. The Classics section also hosts PhD students and postdoctoral scholars, working on subjects in cognitive classics, archaic Greek literature, classical reception studies, and the history of classical scholarship.

The Classics Seminar, running since 2003, is our research forum, where staff, students, and international experts meet to discuss and exchange ideas on ongoing research. Since 1922, the University of Oslo is home to the renowned Classics journal Symbolae Osloenses: Norwegian Journal of Greek and Latin Studies.

More about the position

The person appointed will be affiliated with the Faculty’s organized research training. The academic work is to result in a doctoral thesis that will be defended at the Faculty with a view to obtaining the degree of PhD. The successful candidate is expected to join the existing research milieu or network and contribute to its development. PhD students are expected to participate in the Classics Seminar and present results of their ongoing research at least once a year. Read more about the doctoral degree.

The appointment is for a duration of 3 years. All PhD Candidates who submit their doctoral dissertation for assessment with a written recommendation from their supervisor within 3 years or 3 ½ years after the start of their PhD position, will be offered, respectively, a 12 or 6 month completion scholarship.UiO/ Anders Lien

Qualification requirements

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent in Classics (Greek and/or Latin philology). The Master’s degree must have been obtained and the final evaluation must be available by the application deadline
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English, see Language requirements
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the position

To be eligible for admission to the doctoral programmes at the University of Oslo, applicants must, as a minimum, have completed a five-year graduation course (Master’s degree or equivalent), including a Master’s thesis of at least 30 ECTS. In special cases, the Faculty may grant admission on the basis of a one-year Master course following an assessment of the study programme’s scope and quality.

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on:

  • The project’s scientific merit, research-related relevance and innovation
  • The applicant’s estimated academic and personal ability to complete the project within the time frame
  • The applicant’s ability to complete research training
  • Good collaboration skills and an ability to join interdisciplinary academic communities

Applicants who have recently graduated with excellent results may be given preference
