Doctoral position in cancer epidemiology

项目介绍

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.

Part of the success of our department is due to our collaborative spirit where one factor is that researchers at the Department share and co-finance common resources (e.g., IT and an applied biostatistics group). The department is situated at campus Solna. Further information can be found at http://ki.se/en/meb

The research group

The doctoral student will join a research team led by Assistant Professor Jiayao Lei, which is part of a broader research group led by Associate Professor Mark Clements, conducting multidisciplinary research on cancer prevention and health economic evaluations.

The research team is dedicated to advancing preventive medicine, with a primary focus on preventing diseases associated with human papillomavirus (HPV). Our work involves comprehensive evaluations of HPV vaccination and screening programs using extensive nationwide register data. We provide a vibrant and intellectually stimulating scientific environment, with opportunities for collaboration with leading researchers both internationally and nationally, particularly with the Center for Cervical Cancer Elimination at Karolinska University Hospital.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

Globally, around 5% of new cancer cases are attributable to high-risk HPV infections, which include cervical, vulvar, vaginal, penile, anal and oropharyngeal cancers. The objective is to perform an internationally leading research program to guide the prevention and early detection of HPV-related cancers. We will evaluate the effectiveness of HPV vaccination to prevent HPV-related cancers, assess whether HPV vaccination is associated with fertility and reproductive outcomes, and predict the impact of HPV vaccination on the future disease burden of HPV-related cancers. The student will gain experience in both observational studies and mathematical modelling. The project will leverage the excellent Swedish register infrastructure through a research database that links several Swedish population and healthcare registers.

Under supervision, the doctoral student will be responsible for literature reviews, study design and data analyses, and the interpretation and presentation of results (through scientific publications and conference presentations).
