To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

The Exosome group is led by Professor Susanne Gabrielsson, Department of Medicine, Division of Immunology and Respiratory Medicine, which studies natural nanovesicles called exosomes or extracellular vesicles (EVs). EVs are messengers that transport information between cells, and are studied as mediators of disease, biomarkers and therapeutic tools. The group is specifically interested in the immunologic role of EVs and how they can be used as biomarkers or therapeutic targets in lung diseases. The co-supervisors, Prof. and Senior Consultant Anders Lindén and MD-PhD Susanna Kullberg, have a long track record in clinical and immunological studies of COPD and Sarcoidosis respectively.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The PhD student will work in studies on clinical material from patients with sarcoidosis and COPD, and how their EVs stimulate or regulate immune responses. The student will also investigate if advanced EV detection tools can be used to develop EVs as biomarkers in lung diseases. The studies will be performed in model systems in vitro and in vivo. The studies will include work on patient material, cell lines and primary cells.
The work may also contain handling of animals and studies in animal model systems.
Methods used in the studies include biochemical methods, as well as cellular and molecular immunological techniques.

A) General eligibility requirementYou meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or
2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

– Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

(A) and (B) can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education.

Skills and personal qualities

We are looking for a highly motivated person with an interest in cellular and molecular immunology. Methods used in the study include biochemical methods, as well as cellular and molecular immunological techniques, and experience in these are desired.

The following qualifications will be especially valued:

• Master degree in immunology or a medical degree or corresponding knowledge.
• Experience in immunological techniques, cell culture, and EV analyses.
• Good knowledge in the English Language, written and spoken.
