Applicants interested in Chemical Physics apply through the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. In the online application, select  “Chemistry and Chemical Biology” as your program choice and select “Chemical Physics” in the Area of Study menu.

From the elucidation of the properties and behavior of nanostructures to the characterization of the interior workings of individual cells to the preparation of the first quantum spin liquid, research in experimental physical chemistry and chemical physics is an intriguing and inviting area of study in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. Newly developed spectroscopic methods help researchers follow reactions on surfaces, in the stratosphere, in live cells, all the way down to the single photon level, and in so doing help guide further design of new systems.

The PhD program in chemical physics is designed for students who wish to prepare themselves for the study of chemical problems by the methods and theories of modern physics.

When completing the online application, prospective students in Chemical Physics must apply through Chemistry and Chemical Biology.
