Overview
The Department of Applied Health Research is leading a wide range of research projects and is also collaborating on a large number of national and international research projects. The Department:
- is driven by the need to tackle the social gradient in health and to improve health and health care across all social groups;
- focuses on those interventions, programmes and pathways which are most likely to have a substantial impact in terms of health outcomes and reductions in health and health care inequalities;
- has interests that span health care and public health services and measures to influence policy, clinical decisions and health related behaviour;
- is concerned with evaluating the quality (effectiveness, cost effectiveness, equity and appropriateness) of health care and public health interventions; and
- focuses on developing the knowledge base about the adoption, implementation and dissemination of evidence based health care and public health interventions.

The Department of Applied Health Research focuses of the following areas of research:
- Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods in applied health research which can influence policy, clinical decision, health services, health related behaviour

Students graduating in the last three years have secured employment in local and central government, public health organisations, NHS trusts, hospitals and clinical trial units, as well as research posts at UCL and other higher education institutions.
Employability
The Institute and UCL offers world-class education and training. It manages many of the UK’s largest, most comprehensive longitudinal datasets, and evaluates strategies for the prevention and treatment of physical and mental ill health. It carries out innovative work on behaviour change, and on the practice of primary care as well as leading applied health and health policy research.

Networking
The Institute’s research departments collaborate with third sector and governmental organisations, as well as members of the media, both nationally and internationally to ensure the highest possible impact of their work beyond the academic community. Students are encouraged to take up internships with relevant organisations where funding permits. Members of staff also collaborate closely with academics from leading institutions globally.

This MPhil/PhD programme, part of the Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care, provides you with an opportunity to develop your research skills within a research environment that undertakes world-leading multi-disciplinary research to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of health care and public health interventions, with particular expertise in reducing socioeconomic inequalities and evaluating health service re-organisation.
The Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care (IEHC) has an extremely active PhD programme which currently supports over 100 research students from all over the world including Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Australia and Asia.
The diversity of expertise across the Institute ensures that it provides a vibrant environment in which students can develop skills and forge careers within a wide range of national and international settings.
