If you are looking to build an international research career at the intersection of control, neuroengineering, and healthcare technology, this PhD is the opportunity to work with people with Parkinson’s disease. The Department of Electrical and Photonics Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Electro) invites applicants for a 3-year PhD position in close collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology.
During the 3 years, you will develop next-generation data-driven methods for diagnosis, rehabilitation, and personalized treatment while working with leading researchers in computational neuroscience, machine learning, wearable sensing, and adaptive control. You will gain access to strong clinical collaborations and international research networks, providing an excellent foundation for a future career in academia, healthcare innovation, or advanced technology development.
The PhD project is financed by DTU and is part of a joint alliance research project. The alliance partner is Chalmers University of Technology, Electrical Engineering, Signal Processing and Biomedical Engineering Division.
Responsibilities and qualifications

This project focuses on developing a novel multimodal data-driven framework for modeling, monitoring, and regulating motor dysfunctions associated with Parkinson’s disease. By combining wearable sensing technologies, biomedical signal processing, machine learning, computational neuroscience, and adaptive nonlinear control, you will contribute to the development of next-generation digital diagnostics and personalized neurorehabilitation solutions. The project is conducted in close collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology and clinical partners, providing a unique opportunity to work in an international and highly interdisciplinary research environment.
The PhD student will be supervised by Associate Professor Silvia Tolu and Associate Professor Dimitrios Papageorgiou at DTU, with co-supervision from Associate Professor Silvia Muceli at Chalmers University of Technology. The successful candidate will undertake a 4-6 month research stay at Chalmers University of Technology and work closely with a parallel PhD project focusing on upper-limb motor control in health and disease.
Your primary tasks will be to:
- Analyze multimodal physiological and movement data
- Develop data-driven computational models of pathological motor dynamics
- Design nonlinear state estimation and observer algorithms for hidden disease states
- Collaborate with clinical and academic partners
- Disseminate findings through scientific publications and presentations at international conferences
The candidate will participate in PhD courses, international training activities, workshops, and research exchanges that support both scientific excellence and professional development.
You may be a strong fit for this role if you have:
- A master’s degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Robotics, Automation, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or another relevant field
- An academic background in control systems, signal processing, computational modeling, or related areas
- Experience with machine learning and programming using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools
- Methodological and analytical skills with a strong interest in research
- The ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary research team
- Strong communication skills in English, both written and spoken
- Motivation, ambition, and enthusiasm for developing innovative technologies for healthcare applications
You must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
Starting date is 1 February 2027, or according to mutual agreement. The position is a full-time position.
