About the position
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (IMA) at the Natural Science Faculty, has a vacancy for a position as PhD candidate related to development of an emerging battery technology based on aluminium anodes and carbon cathodes. The PhD project is affiliated to the strategic research area TSO Energy at NTNU. The candidate will be part of a PhD pool devoted to various aspects of renewable energy technology. The overall aim of the PhD project is to evaluate selected material qualities (aluminium alloys, carbons, solvents and current collectors) with respect to applicability in aluminium carbon batteries, including perspectives of sustainability, scaleability, and stationary storage profiles.
The main supervisor of the candidate will be Prof. Ann Mari Svensson (IMA), NTNU. In addition, co-supervisors will be appointed, from the Industrial Ecology Group, Faculty of Engineering (Prof. Anders Strømman), Sustainable Electrical Energy Group, Information Technology and Electrical Engineering Faculty (Steve Völler), Department of Architecture and Technology (Prof. Arild Gustavsen)

About the project
The PhD project is related to development of a new battery technology, based on aluminium anodes and carbon cathodes. The development will be conducted in a multidisciplinary framework, implying that materials research is aided by sustainability analysis, and focused around scaleable solutions, relevant for selected stationary storage applications.
Duties of the position
The tasks of the candidate will involve:
- Characterization of materials and laboratory scale battery cells using state-of-the art infrastructure for battery research at Department of Materials Science and Engineering
- Perform relevant sustainability and use relevant energy storage profiles to aid the evaluation of candidate materials
- Presentation of results at project meetings and national and international workshops and conferences
- Preparation of scientific papers
Required selection criteria
The candidate we seek must have
- A master degree in Chemistry/Materials Technology/Process Engineering, or equivalent education. Your course of study must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course, where 120 credits have been obtained at master’s level. Master’s students can apply, but the master’s degree must be obtained and documented before starting the position.
- A strong academic background from your previous studies and have an average grade from your Master’s degree study, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared to NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be considered if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education
- You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty’s Doctoral Programme (https://www.ntnu.edu/nv/phd)
- Good oral and written presentation skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level A2
- Hands on experience with relevant experimental techniques related to electrochemical characterization of battery electrodes and cells, or similar devices
- Knowledge of Python programming
- Knowledge of materials technology, and basic knowledge of environmental assessment of materials
- Good background in the field of electrochemistry
- Good written and oral English skills
If you cannot document skills in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish at level A2 upon employment, you must complete Norwegian courses corresponding to at least 15 credits before the end of the employment period. NTNU will facilitate this.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations for the Universities and Colleges Act (university and colleges regulations) and Regulations for the degrees philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) and philosophiae doctor (ph.d.) in artistic development work at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) for general criteria for the position.
Preferred selection criteria
In the evaluation of candidates, we consider additionally the following criteria
- Experience with HSE procedures
- Experience with scientific writing
- Experience (hands on) with one or more relevant materials characterization techniques (i.e. XRD, SEM, FTIR, Raman or similar)
Personal characteristics
In the evaluation of qualifications of the candidates, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal suitability. We seek a candidate who is interested in development of new energy storage technologies in a cross-disciplinary framework. The candidate should be motivated to undertake an innovative PhD project, related to early stage development of an emerging battery technology. Furthermore, emphasis will be put on communication skills, as well as collaborative skills.
To complete a doctoral degree (PhD), it is important that you are able to:
- Work independently
- Work in a structured way, set goals and make plans to achieve them
- Present and discuss your research with other professionals
- Show curiosity and a strong motivation for the subject
- Analyze data, assess different perspectives and draw well-founded conclusions
- Be flexible and open to adjusting the plan for the project as needed

Salary and conditions
In the position of PhD Candidate, code 1017, your gross salary will normally be NOK 536,200 per annum. A 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.
The period of employment is 3 years, with the possibility of up to one-year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department.
For employment as a PhD Candidate, it is a prerequisite that you gain admission to the PhD programme in Materials Science and Engineering (PhD programme in Materials Science and Engineering – NTNU) within three months of your employment contract start date, and that you participate in an organized doctoral programme throughout the period of employment.
As an employee at NTNU, it is important that you keep yourself up to date with academic and organizational changes and adapt to them.
For the necessary academic and social interaction, it is a prerequisite that you are physically present and available to the institution on a daily basis.
The appointment is carried out in accordance with the principles of the State Employees Act, and Export control(legislation that regulates the export of knowledge, technology and services). Candidates who, after assessment of the application and attachments, are considered to bein conflict with the criteria in the latter act, will not be able to be employed.
Please note that the person hired will work with critical infrastructure and areas affected by controls on the export of strategic goods, services and technology. Candidates who do not meet the requirements for the necessary security clearance, access clearance and authorization as described in the National Security Act, the Export Control Act and the Act on the Implementation of International Sanctions (Sanctions Act) cannot be considered.
