About the position

The Department of Education has a vacant position as a PhD candidate for four years in educational psychology within the area of learning, motivation, and well-being.

We are looking for a PhD candidate with a background in education, psychology, social sciences, or other relevant fields.

The position is affiliated with the EVA2020 project, which aims to evaluate the interdisciplinary topics in the national curriculum renewal. The PhD candidate’s work will consist of 75% research, primarily focusing on how learning, motivation, and well-being are connected to academic performance and choices in upper secondary education, as well as publishing scientific articles on these topics.  
 

The project has collected questionnaire data from 9th-grade students and teachers, which have been linked with data from Statistics Norway (SSB) on students’ backgrounds and school performance. The person employed for this position will work on analyzing these data, requiring an interest in and competence with quantitative analyses.  

Additionally, the position includes 25% teaching, assessment, and supervision of undergraduate students. The PhD candidate will have their workplace at the Department of Education at the University of Oslo and collaborate with researchers affiliated with the EVA2020 project and the teaching team for the study program in Educational Psychological Counseling. The position is associated with the research group DEAL.
 

Responsibilities

  • Manage data, conduct analyses, and publish results in recognized international scientific journals.  
  • Disseminate project results at international and national research conferences and in other relevant forums.  
  • Communicate project findings to authorities, user groups, and the public.  
  • Collaborate with researchers both internally at the University of Oslo and externally.  
  • Teaching, grading, and supervision.

Qualification requirements

Admission to the doctoral program is a requirement for employment as a PhD candidate. It is expected that the candidate will complete the project within the PhD period. The purpose of the position is for the candidate to obtain a doctoral degree/PhD during the employment period. Applicants must satisfy the requirements for admission to the faculty´s PhD programme. This normally includes:

  • Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent in education, psychology, social sciences, or other relevant fields.
  • A master’s degree (120 ECTS) with a minimum grade of B (ECTS grading scale) or equivalent. The master’s degree must include a thesis of at least 30 ECTS, also with a minimum grade of B.
  • A bachelor’s degree with a minimum grade C (ECTS grading scale)
  • For 5-year studies, the average grade must be C or better for the first three years, and B or better for the last two years (ECTS grading scale). The Master thesis must have been graded with a minimum grade B.

In addition, the candidate must have:

  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English and Norwegian (or another Scandinavian language)
  • Experience with and competence in using quantitative research methods and statistical software.

Academic strength, good collaboration skills, and the ability and motivation to complete a research project will be emphasized.
