The Institute of Biomedical Ethics and History of Medicine (IBME) of the University of Zurich is internationally recognized for its role in advancing bioethics research and education. As a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Bioethics, the IBME provides thought leadership and ethical guidance on pressing issues in biomedical research, policy, and practice. The IBME team comprises interdisciplinary experts dedicated to addressing the complex ethical, policy, regulatory, and legal questions arising from modern medicine, medical technologies, and healthcare.
This PhD position is offered within the University Research Priority Program (URPP) Innovative Therapies in Rare Diseases (ITINERARE), a program at the University of Zurich dedicated to pioneering molecular and gene therapies for selected genetic disorders. Alongside these therapeutic advancements, ITINERARE offers a platform that brings together multidisciplinary expertise to address the societal challenges associated with novel therapies. The research will explore regulatory approaches, legal and ethical considerations, and pricing strategies, particularly for gene therapies and other innovative therapies for rare diseases. Working closely with clinicians, ethicists and life sciences researchers, the candidate will contribute to research that aims to enhance the responsible rollout of these therapies both in Switzerland and internationally.
This position will also be part of the PhD program in Biomedical Ethics and Law/Medical Track of the Institute of Biomedical Ethics and History of Medicine.
Your responsibilities
- Conducting in-depth regulatory, policy and ethics analysis for innovative therapies aimed at rare diseases.
- Collaborating closely with clinicians, ethicists and life sciences researchers to integrate practical, evidence-based findings into regulatory and policy recommendations.
- Collaborating in the development of new AI-based methodologies in regulatory affairs and research ethics research.
- Disseminating research findings through peer-reviewed publications and academic conferences.
Your profile
We are seeking an outstanding PhD candidate who has:
- A Master’s degree in medicine, life sciences (e.g., pharmaceutical sciences) or a related field.
- Interest in drug regulatory affairs, pharmaceutical law, and research ethics.
- Basic knowledge of AI text analysis or a general interest in medical informatics, with the option to acquire these skills during the PhD.
- Fluency in English, with German skills as an advantage.
